Jessica and Matthew
How We Met
Matt and I met during our freshman year of college. We went to a super small college so it was the kind of place where everyone knew each other. Matt was on the baseball team and I had a big crush on him. We finally spoke in December, when I was helping some of his friends create class schedules for the spring semester. Matt had no idea what classes to take and asked me to help him create his schedule so I put us in two of the same classes. Clever, right? Fast forward to January when we were hanging out with all of our friends at the school dorms late one night. I offered to give Matt and his friends a ride home. His friends ended up falling asleep in the car leaving him and me to talk the whole way home. Our conversations flowed like we had known each other forever. The next morning I found a cellphone in my car exactly where Matt was sitting and got in contact with him through a friend ASAP because how can someone live without a cellphone now a days?!? This forced us to meet up that night so I could return his phone. He ended up asking me to hangout with him that night and we’ve been together ever since. A year later, I found out it was no accident that he left his phone in my car and it was just a way to get me to hangout with him again.
How He Asked
Ever since freshman year, I knew I wanted to marry Matt one day. Then, on Saturday morning on April 29th, Matt and I woke up and got ready to go to a family gathering. We got in the car and started driving toward his house. Out of nowhere, Matt got off the wrong exit. It was no average exit either—it was the one for where we went to college. Confused, I asked him where we were going. He told me that he really wanted to stop at the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden before the party. Although I did not want to be late for the party, I agreed since I’ve been begging him to go there for months now. We got to the front of the ticket line and oddly, Matt had bought tickets in advanced. This was very weird, I thought, seeing as he usually wouldn’t plan these types of events without me. I started to get a little suspicious but when we got into the park and got lost (ha, typical Matt), all of my suspicions went away. We finally found the cherry blossom paths in the park, which were at beautiful peak bloom. We walked through the beautiful aisle of trees holding hands, surrounded by pink flowers like clouds above us with the morning sun peaking through. All of a sudden, Matt stopped in the middle of the aisle and handed me a small book. In it was a hand-written love story. It was my favorite love story, ours. At the end of the story it said “And now I just want to ask you something that will make me the happiest and luckiest man in the world…”
I turned to Matt, tears filling up my eyes as he got down on one knee. He opened up the engagement ring box, which was engraved with “Will you be mine forever?” and asked me to marry him.
I was speechless and the feeling I had at that moment was like no other I had ever felt. I wanted nothing more than to be his forever. When I finally said “yes”, Matt stood up and wiped away my tears. In a field filled with people looking at the beautifully bloomed cherry blossoms around us, it was like no one was Ithere but me and the person I will spend forever with.
