How We Met
Even though we had mutual friends for years, we never crossed paths. During the summer of 2011, I went to a friend’s house for a party, which he was supposed to attend. However, due to working late that night, he decided to stay home. But, one of his good friends, Vinny, was there and overheard me talking to a group of girls about how I wanted to find a good man. So, when Vinny heard this he came up to me and excitedly expressed to me, how he knew great guy, named JB (as his friends call him) that I should meet. “I’m going to set you guys up,” he suggested. At the time, I thought to myself, “Sure, why not.” I didn’t think much of it, since people often say those types of things and then nothing ever happens or it doesn’t work out.
Not even a week later, I get a call from Vinny’s girlfriend at the time, asking me if I would go on a double date with her and Vinny, so they could introduce me to JB. Since they both spoke so highly of him, I agreed to go and give him a shot. On August 18 2011, we went on our first double date and 5 ½ years later…here we are.
How He Asked
We absolutely love nature and would rather spend a day hiking up a mountain or go exploring through the woods than anything else. So, when he mentioned about going for a hike on Memorial Day weekend to Goat Hill Overlook, of course I said yes. Looking back, on that day, there were so many signs! But, for some reason whenever I questioned something, he had the best responses making me completely unaware for what he really had planned for that day. For instance, normally, when we go on a hike, I typically wear yoga pants and a t-shirt. But, since we originally had plans to go to a family party to celebrate Memorial Day, he convinced me to do my make-up and dress differently.
Then, before we went to the overlook, he suggested walking around New Hope and Lambertville with our dog, Sofie. At first, I was surprised he wanted to do that since that’s not something that he would typically say. When I questioned him, he said it would be a good idea to bring (our newly adopted dog) Sofie there, to get her used to being out in public and going to new places. Once again, I thought…okay that makes sense. Meanwhile, as we were walking around New Hope and Lambertville, his phone was updating one of our good friends, Cody, on our location at all times.
Little did I know, Cody and our other friend Jenna, who is a photographer, were decked out in camo and already at the overlook setting up their spots in the woods. Once we arrived to the overlook, some people might have thought it was pure luck that there was no one else around, but those who knew the truth knew that he had already purchased Starbucks gift cards in advance to hand out at the time we were arriving. The people that were already there or arriving just before we got there received a gift card from Cody. Cody simply told them the situation, handed them the gift card, and asked them to come back in about 30 minutes, so we could have the whole overlook to ourselves. As we were walking the path up to the overlook, there was a group of people coming down the path smiling at us.
To me, I thought, “Oh what friendly people.” But Jonathan knew exactly why they were smiling and was hoping they would not say anything. Simply saying the overlook is beautiful, is an understatement. Once we got there I Immediately started taking photos of our dog Sofie with the view in the background, and then of course selfies together. Then all of a sudden, he grabbed me and made me stand in a certain spot facing him and told me to take my backpack off.
I stood there puzzled, until he got down on one knee and reached for his pocket and took out a box. After that, all I can remember saying out loud repeatedly is, “Oh my gosh, are you serious? Are you serious?” Followed with, “Do my parents know?” Once he started talking and telling me how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, all I remember thinking is, “I can’t believe this is finally happening” and couldn’t get a smile off my face. As soon as he said, “Jessica Irene Moustakas, will you marry me?” I screamed, “YES!” As we were hugging, he whispered, “By the way, we aren’t alone.” That’s when I turned my head and saw Cody and Jenna walking towards us with a camera, flowers, and some celebratory drinks.
To say I was completely shocked that he asked me? No, because after 5 ½ years, it’s something we’ve discussed. However, to say I was shocked that I didn’t have a clue, didn’t pick up on so many little hints, and that it was finally happening, then…ABSOLUTELY YES!
