Jessica and Jesus
How We Met
Jesus and I have basically known each other our entire lives! We met when we were just four years old at preschool and haven’t separated since. All throughout our schools years, Jesus was the class clown and I was the well-behaved student. What does that mean? Not only have we known each other for the majority of our lives, but we also sat next to each other in class from preschool until college so that our behaviors can balance each other out. Our love story began in 2008 when we were in middle school. One field day, while in eighth grade, Jesus stole my digital camera. I spent all day chasing after him trying to get it back.
Finally, at the very end of the day, he gave it back to me with a picture of himself on it. (Yes, I still have the picture ten years later) That same week Jesus asked me to be his date to our school’s Winter Formal. We both got all dressed up and danced the night away. At the end of the night Jesus pulled me aside and asked me those magic words, “Will you be my girlfriend?” That day marked the beginning of our amazing journey together. Jesus and I have seen each other grow mentally, physically, and emotionally. We continued to be by each others’ side no matter the circumstance throughout the past ten years.
How He Asked
That Thursday night was supposed to be a “girls night”. Jesus’s cousins and I had planned to go out to one of our favorite restaurants in Miami to celebrate a birthday. Before arriving at the dinner spot we had to make a quick stop to check out a “petting zoo” for an upcoming family event. As we are being given a tour, I spot Jesus standing by the trees. He gave me a long, tight hug and took me by the hand. We began to walk down a lighted aisle filled with one hundred of our favorite photos. Hung from burlap, Jesus placed photos of us traveling, our careers, our family and friends, and our grandparents who we love and cherish deeply, but are no longer here with us today. I heard him say, “Look, I included pictures of our grandparents because I wanted to make sure they were here with us today.” We continued to walk hand in hand surrounded by romantic twinkling lights and white rose petals.
The whole time Jesus made sure to tell me how much he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. At the end of the aisle of trees was a vintage red tractor, dozens of roses, and marquee letters that spelled “marry me”. Jesus walked me all the way to the end and told me to stand in a heart he made out of candles. That is when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that he had invited both of our families to join us in this incredible moment. In the heart, Jesus got down on one knee and asked me to be his forever.
Through all my emotions in that moment, I could barely get “YES” out of my mouth, even though I wanted to scream it out loud. Jesus spent days putting together the most beautiful, perfect proposal that I will remember forever. When I pictured my dream proposal, this is exactly what I visualized. I am so very grateful that I am marrying a man who makes my life a fairytale!
