How We Met

We met when I was a third year at the University of Virginia and Chris was in his final year at the Naval Academy.  We began dating in September and I soon after left to study abroad in Spain.  Those months abroad were a testament to our relationship since I left when our relationship was still young but we remained strong and happy throughout the entire time.  From that time on our relationship remained a somewhat long distance relationship whether we were an hour and a half apart, four hours, or across country (which we did for a year).  No matter how far apart we were, we made sure to see each other as often as we could and our love never faltered.  We’ve been together for over three years and are so ready for everything that our future holds!

How He Asked

I hate surprises…literally hate them so for the past few weeks I had been trying to figure out when Chris was going to ask since we had been looking at rings for a while.  My friend texted me earlier in the week letting me know that Chris had reached out to her and that he was planning on proposing around New Years.  Once I found that out I relaxed a little and drove down to visit Chris for a few days before flying home to California.  On Tuesday night we went to a Christmas party for his battalion and on the way out we left the base from a different gate.  The area around base is still unfamiliar to me so I just assumed it was normal to take longer to get home from that gate.  After about an hour and a half of driving he finally filled me in on the fact that my suitcase was already in the trunk and he called a hotel to inform them of a late check-in.

We then proceeded to drive five and half more hours to an undisclosed location (he refused to tell me the entire time).  We pulled into the hotel, the Grove Park Inn, in Asheville, NC, which is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit and I was so excited!  I just thought that he had planned this adorable and thoughtful Christmas present.  The following day he had a whole spa day planned for me and I was able to get my nails done and just relax for a little.  Chris had planned an afternoon at the Biltmore Estate and had mentioned that when he booked the tickets he had won a complimentary photo shoot.  I was suspicious when he told me that but when we walked up to the photography stand he had a certificate and the workers called the photographer to let him know the “contest winners” were here.

I then thought it was actually legit since they were going along with it!  We started taking pictures on the beautiful courtyard that overlooks the blue ridge mountains and after a few shots Chris just got down on one knee!

I absolutely lost it but everything about that moment as perfect.  He planned that all in two days (he’s never been a fan of planning ahead of time)!

The rest of the afternoon and night as incredible, we went wine tasting and a lovely dinner and a candlelit walk throughout the estate.
