Jessica and Aaron's Belated Birthday Proposal

How We Met

I met Aaron my last year of high school. He and many of his friends from across town came to high school dances at where I attended, and we ended up in the same group of friends. As I moved to Northern California for college, we remained friends and when I would come home during holiday and summer breaks, we would catch up. There were moments throughout my first couple years of college where I had an interest beyond friendship towards him, but we remained friends for four years. I got to come home and spend a few days with family and friends on a break from school. One of the days, I had planned to go to K1 speed and hang out with friends, and we were going to meet at Aaron’s house. I showed up, and it ended up at the last minute that no one else could come. So we went by ourselves, and it was the first time we’d ever spent one on one time together. We went to the Carlsbad flower fields, grabbed a bite to eat, and at the end of the day on my drive back home I remember thinking, “Today was awesome with Aaron. I want more days like today!” I finished out that school year and we kept in contact through Skype and texting, and he asked me to be his girlfriend on June 2, 2014.

Now, after a year of long distance that included many visits during my senior year of college, a sweet summer back home, and a semester of school together in Kauai, I am beyond excited to say he is my fiancé and is the man I have been praying for as my future husband.

How He Asked

Aaron planned a day for me to “have a belated birthday celebration,” but it was actually to propose to me. He had the ring for quite a while and had been planning the proposal for months, and I didn’t have the slightest clue about his plan. The day started with Aaron making chocolate chip pancakes and having breakfast together, and then we headed to the beach got to watch a few pro surfers out in the water before Aaron surprised me with a nails appointment! Aaron then told me to get dressed up and ready for a nice dinner, so I curled my hair and got dressed up. At the last minute, Aaron said I needed to put on athletic clothes. I was so confused and had no idea what was going to happen!

So with no explanation as to what was happening, Aaron drove an hour and half to the other side of the island of Kauai. We ended up at a beautiful hiking spot we had gone to a few weeks before to hike with some friends. It was a bit cloudy and misty, but Aaron insisted we do the hike! When we reached the end of the trail, and I saw the most beautiful picnic set up. Next to a hand painted sign that said ‘Jessica’, was a big blanket with music playing, flowers, candles, and a picnic basket filled with all of my favorites – sushi, brownies, chocolates, and Reeses set up along the edge of the cliff. Hanging in the trees next to us was a big sheet, and hanging behind it was a clothesline with a dress hanging on it that I had been wanting to buy that he had bought for me to wear. Aaron told me to change into the dress behind the sheet, and then Aaron changed into nice dress clothes as well. We sat on the blanket and ate sushi, and I was so touched by the beauty of the set up and the time and planning for my birthday that I started to cry.

Aaron stood me up and said, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” That’s when I realized what was about to happen. Aaron got down on one knee and said, “I’ve had this ring for seven months and have been planning and praying about when to give it to you. I love you and want to be with you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me, Jessica?” I was in shock and overwhelmed, but of course said yes! Our friends and photographers had been hiding the whole time and popped out of the bushes and celebrated with us. It was such an incredible day!
