Jess and Jason
How We Met
Jason and I first met on Tinder in 2014…he was my first (and last) tinder date, and I was his as well! We still joke about the fact that I had no idea what tinder really was, I simply was trying to meet people..ahh to be young and naive. After a few kinks, and one short break, we decided to fully commit to each other and have been inseparable ever since. Family is first for both of us and we fit so perfectly into each other’s families! Our families get along so well also which is everything we could hope for.
How He Asked
Fast forward to 2017. In January Jason took me to go ring shopping, unbeknownst to me he had already asked my dad for my hand in marriage that Christmas. However, a year of hardships was to come, as I was in and out of emergency surgeries, 5 between March and the following December. In that time, Jason showed such compassion and love while taking care of me. It was an extremely trying time for me emotionally, and although I wouldn’t have blamed him if he had, he never once considered backing out. He held me and cared for me, and instead showed me through his actions that he was truly in this. I found my “in sickness and in health” kind of love. We grew so much in this year, and it brought us even closer together.
The hardships would continue though, and we, unfortunately, had a lot of big decisions to make about our future of having the family we both desperately want. Jason stood by me without any hesitation, even in the moments I felt like my situation was not fair to him. He would only reassure me that it’s “our situation” and that he wasn’t going anywhere. He’s kind of amazing like that. Despite all the craziness going on with my medical issues, I was eager to marry my best friend. After our ring shopping in January, I was left with the hope that it would be sometime within the next year. Of course, I figured after surgery it may be put on hold, but Jason promised me he had a plan. Each year for Thanksgiving his family goes to the Frio River in Concan, Texas. This was our fourth year together and my family was going to come!! In hindsight, it should have been more obvious to me that this would be when he was going to do it, but I had in my mind that he was going to propose at Christmas when we were in my hometown of Durango, Colorado.
Anyways, we always do couples/group pictures before our big meal on Thanksgiving day. I took all of their pictures (I do photography in between school and work) and at last, it was our turn. We take a few sets and then his sister says “Y’all face the water”. At first, he had his arm around me and is quiet facing the beautiful river, but then he says, “I have something I’ve been wanting to ask you”. I immediately look at him with the realization of what is about to happen.
After that, I basically blacked out! I remember nodding and I squeaked some version of yes and embraced him. Then I saw the ring, and oh. my. gawd. It was absolutely perfect. It was custom made with every detail so perfectly thought about. He truly had my perfect ring made. I had always told him he could get me a Walmart rin g, that I just really was so excited to finally get to marry him…but the fact that he made sure every detail and aspect of the ring was perfect for me, truly means the world to me. When I swiped right four years ago, I had no idea that I was saying yes to my future, my best friend, and my soulmate. I am one lucky woman.
