Jensen and Justin
How We Met
I met Justin in 2011 when we were 18 years old. I was volunteering for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event and was the co-chair on the survivor committee. I was diagnosed with cancer when I was 13 and wanted to get involved as much as I could to give back to the organizations that helped my family. I had the privilege of working with an older woman named Cathy on the committee who was currently going through treatment again for reoccurring cancer. I got to spend a lot of time with Cathy that summer and whenever we were together she would mention that her grandson was single and that he was just the sweetest thing. I would brush it off every time and just laugh. The event was August 21, 2011 and that was when I finally got to meet her grandson. I saw him from across the survivor tent and looking back I realized that it was one of those moments like in the movies. The young girl looks across the way and sees 1 guy standing there and they fall in love. It was a little bit more awkward than that, as his dad shoved him toward me to finally have us meet. As time went on and we got to know each other we knew that we would be together forever. Unfortunately, his grandma passed away the next year and wont be here to see us get married, but we owe everything to her and thank her for pushing us to meet. I have never experienced more laughter, hope, and adventure than I have with Justin in my life.
How He Asked
Justin and I had been dating for 6 years and I was getting to the point where I thought he would never pop the question. We knew that we wanted to get married and spend the rest of our lives together, but I had no idea when it was coming. On a Monday in July, my best friend asked if I wanted to meet her at the spaghetti factory on the water front for dinner. I had woken up late that day and was not looking 100%, but I agreed and planned to meet her in Portland to carpool. We went to go into the restaurant and she wanted to take a photo in front of the water since it was such a beautiful day. As I turned around the corner I saw my Justin’s 6’11” friend turn around and I was immediately confused. He was playing basketball in Canada and was not home yet. As I look down the long sidewalk I see more people that I know. My grandparents, Justin’s family, our friends, my brother and dad on face time, my mom, my brother, and at the end I see my great-grandpa.. Yeah you probably thought it would be Justin. My great-grandparents have always had a special place in my heart and July 11th was their wedding anniversary. We lost my great-grandma 5 years ago, but I always wanted them to be apart of this special day. My great-grandpa with tears in his eyes told me how proud he is of us and how happy he is I found someone to love. He told me about this special July day and from behind him I see Justin. He slowly walks towards me shaking and gets down on one knee and says “well there isn’t much to say that grandpa didn’t say, I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?” Of course crying I say yes and looking back he couldn’t have done it any better. He had the most important people involved, he did it on a special day, and he made it a surprise.
