How We Met

Peter and I are no strangers to travel. We both lived in separate cities when we started dating after college (we met in college, but remained very good friends until it turned into more). Peter was in Dallas and I was in Chicago after we graduated. A few years later, Peter relocated to Chicago, but ironically the job was in the airline industry, so the travel continued, but to much more fun places, together.

How He Asked

After a few years of living and dating in the same city (and many vacations later). Peter told me he wanted to take me on a surprise trip for my birthday. A few days before our departure, he told me to pack for tropical weather, an extremely appealing thing for Chicagoans mid-March. However, at 6am the day of our trip, I found myself boarding a plane for Boston. I was less than enthused. We landed in Boston and I was determined to make the most out of the trip when Peter blindfolded me and walked me to a gate that said ‘St. Thomas’ (we took a boat to St. John when we landed). After 2 days of relaxing in the sun, Peter suggested we walk to a lookout point (that I had admired a few days prior) before dinner. I thought the entire thing was my idea, and Peter let me think it. With nothing but a champagne bottle in his hand (the ring was just casually in his pocket), he got down on one knee and proposed right at sunset with the question ‘will you chase sunsets with me for the rest of your life?’ – cheesy, but so appropriate for us.

It was the most intimate moment and we just sat there and drank champagne for what seemed like hours. Minus a few calls to my sister and our parents, we kept the news secret for a couple of days and it was the most romantic couple of days we’ve spent together.

A few months after Peter’s proposal, we decided to have our engagement pictures taken in our favorite city (and the first international trip we took together 3 years prior) – Paris. Katie Mitchell did an amazing job of capturing every moment and we had a fantastic morning with her. Having Peter twirl me around the Louvre at sunrise was so much fun and a memory we won’t soon forget.
