Jennifer and Brandon
How we met
My best friend was famous for holding gatherings on a regular basis, most of which involved hanging out in her parent’s basement. Usually, I knew the people coming over, but every once in a while someone new would come along. Brandon was one of the unfamiliar faces that ended up hanging out.
He was gorgeous. I was merely 20 years old and just ending a brief but painful relationship while also recovering from the loss of a friend – so I was a bit overwhelmed. He was my saving grace. Our group of friends could see that I was intrigued by him, and he seemingly felt the same. That night we fell asleep snuggled in the basement watching movies.
He actually had a date already planned the next afternoon with a girl that he knew through a friend of his mom. Not wanting to stand her up, he went on the date – but ultimately couldn’t stop thinking about me. Brandon knew I was going to be at a local restaurant with the same group of friends that night, so he made sure to end the date in time to see me. I was there with another guy (a friend) whom Brandon thought I was dating, but that didn’t stop him from stealing a hug from me before we all went our separate ways. I didn’t know if I was ever going to see him again. All I knew was that he was gorgeous and I probably didn’t have a real chance with him anyway.
A day or so later, I received a phone call on my cell phone from a number I didn’t recognize. When I answered, he said “this is Brandon” even though I knew he had never asked me for my number. He had apparently asked one of our mutual friends for my phone number! We hit it off so well that we continued to see each other from then on.
How he asked
I have family living all over the U.S. and some of them were staying at our house for a week and a half in November. I thought it would be a great idea to have them all come pick out a Christmas tree with us the day after Thanksgiving, so I asked them if they would be interested in coming. Brandon had mentioned that his mom would be bringing some of the grandkids too. I didn’t think too much of it, I just thought it would be a great way to have all of our family get together since most of them I don’t get to see often.
When we got to the tree farm his mom and sister insisted that we take some family photos before picking out a tree, so we all followed them toward the back of the tree farm. I joked about how people probably thought it was weird we had so many people with us, but I chalked it up to the fact that my family was in town and everyone wanted to see them.
I heard someone say “how about standing in front of this tree with the bow on it?” and when I looked up I saw a tree with a red bow and I chuckled thinking they were kidding, but I went to stand in front of it anyway. We must have had a crowd of 25 family members there (I guess that should have tipped me off). I looked at the tree and saw it had decorations on it, and I started to read it out loud “Jen – will – you – ….” and that is when I realized what was going on.
He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was perfect. Our whole family got to be there to watch our engagement!
