Jenna and Tanner

How We Met

Tanner and I met when I was 14 and he was 13. It was 4th of July at my best friends family bonfire. I hadn’t heard of Tanner before because he was still in middle school while I had started high school already, but when my best friend introduced me to her cousin, I just knew I had to get to know him better. That night we made a pact- if neither of us had significant others by the time college was over, we would just marry each other.

Little did we know about a year later we would literally fall in love, and not the “you’re my backup” type of love, either. We dated all through high school and experienced all the big life events together, proms, getting accepted to colleges, cheering for each other at soccer games, and getting yelled at by our parents when we came home past curfew.

Looking back it seems like we were just kids then, we had no clue what we were doing, but what we had deep down never left. We picked colleges in the same city, we watched each other get our first jobs and apartments, learned to cook more than just Ramen together, and stayed up late talking about what we want the rest of our lives to look like- traveling, serving Jesus and (one day) getting married.

How He Asked

It was the weekend before I graduated from undergrad and we left on a summer-long trip to Hawaii. Tanner told me we were going on a going-away dinner date. I was so excited and bought a new dress and everything. Beforehand he told me he wanted to stop at Buttermilk Falls (a waterfall we have always loved and has often been our go-to hangout on a day with no plans). As we walked down the path to the falls I saw candles lining the walkway to the overlook, and over 300 tiny candles lit on the overlook itself.

As we got closer, I saw rose petals covering the ground and heard “A Thousand Years” playing quietly in the background. Tanner asked me to dance with him to the first song we ever slow danced to 5 years earlier, and then asked me to do life with him forever. I’ve never felt so beautiful in my life as I do with the ring he gave me on my finger.

I can’t believe everything we dreamed of at 15 is finally coming true. I still feel like those teenagers coming home past curfew and giggling on the phone at 3 am, and I cannot WAIT to feel that way every day, for the rest of my life, and beyond that.
