Jenn and Phil
How We Met
Phil and I met in the fall of 2013 and spent our first date grabbing lunch at a tiny cafe near my hometown. We were both so nervous that we barely ate a thing so we decided to go for a stroll along the rail trail that runs along side the cafe instead. Conversation flowed so easily for us that before we knew it, we had walked five miles (in flip flops). After a few more dates, which included attending a music festival, apple picking, and an amazing hike at Old Rag, Phil slyly asked me if he could introduce me as his girlfriend at a Halloween party – slick move, Phil. Of course I said yes and we’ve been adventuring together ever since.
How He Asked
A year prior to our engagement, my father was involved in an accident on Valentine’s Day. He ended up passing away from his injuries a week later. That year was the most difficult year of my life and Phil stood by me and my family through it all. He was my rock. Since Phil knew that Valentine’s Day would be especially hard this year, he planned a romantic, belated Valentine’s day date to Longwood Gardens to check out the orchid display. Ever since the beginning of our relationship, we’ve always loved visiting museums, art galleries, and botanic gardens. We arrived to Longwood shortly after they opened on a Sunday morning and spent hours walking through the Conservatory marveling at the amazing orchids and blue poppies on display.
Before we left, we wanted to get a picture in front of a huge archway made of orchids. Of course, that area was super crowded with other guests who had the same idea as us. Phil suggested that we keep looking around at the displays until the crowd thinned out a bit. We made our way over to a quieter, more secluded area and started looking around at different things. Phil called me over to look at a particular display. When I walked over to him he handed me a small plaque that looked just like all the display markers that Longwood places in front of their various plants, except this one had my name printed on it along with “The Lifetime Adventure.” By the time I looked up from reading the plaque, Phil was down on one knee asking me to marry him. Of course I said YES! Oh – and we did manage to get that picture in front of the arch, ring included!
