Jamielee and Ariel
I had been away at medical school in the Dominican Republic for several years, so I hadn’t been able to spend my birthday at home in 5 years. Being in a long-distance relationship was very difficult for the both of us, but I had finally graduated 2 months before and was finally back home for good. Ariel made it his responsibility to plan (along with the help of my parents) a small get-together for my 27th birthday, of which I was told the day before. So the day finally arrives, and I become a little upset because its almost 5pm and I still haven’t seen and have barely heard from my boyfriend at all on the day of my birthday!! The guests arrive (Ariel, his parents, sister and brother-in-law, my aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) and before saying grace and proposing a small toast, my parents ask each guest to say a few words to me or a special birthday message. It was weird but cool at the same time, like a eulogy for the living. Heartfelt wishes and memories are shared by all, except for Ariel. Little did I know there was something bigger than a birthday wish coming. He was the last one to speak. He stood in front of me, and with tears in his eyes, he told me how much he loves me, that sometimes he still “can’t believe I’m his girlfriend” and that he promises to love me for the rest of our lives. I didn’t realize what was going on until he turned around, and I see his sister hand him a small box; he faces me once again, crying, gets down on one knee, and asks me to marry him! I said YES!
