Jacquelyn and David

How We Met

I was living in San Diego, CA and David was living across the country in Asheville, NC. He was playing for the Colorado Rockies Low-A minor league affiliate, the Asheville Tourists. A mutual friend who thought we may hit it off connected us and we began casually texting on and off, attempting to find cities that we could potentially meet up in during our work travel. This casual texting went on for a solid year…

It wasn’t until spring of 2015 that I was in Scottsdale, AZ for work and he was there for Spring Training so we finally decided we would go on a date. I finished up work for the day and was hanging with my friend Christina who I had driven to Scottsdale with. She had her guard up about me meeting up with a random guy I had never met in person so she decided to drive me to meet up with him — David sent me an address of a restaurant to meet at and when we pulled up it was a dark empty parking lot. Christina will never let it down that the first time she dropped me off with David, she thought it was going to be the last time she saw me as I climbed into his blacked out lifted truck. Turns out, David had no idea the restaurant had closed down. That night, we went and got froyo and all of our long text conversations became well worth it. We hung out a second time that weekend at a park in Scottsdale then said our goodbyes as he was headed off to New Britain, CT for the season.

We stayed in touch that season, still keeping it friendly but I never had time in my schedule to go out and see him. Toward the end of the season, he began calling and FaceTiming me regularly and he was more adamant about me making a trip. In October of 2015, David gave it one last shot and asked me to come out to Scottsdale where he was living that off season to join him and his friends for a fun Halloween weekend. I finally gave in and made the trip which turned out to be an amazing weekend with him and all his friends. He says the moment he saw me swing a golf club at Top Golf, he wanted to lock me down. haha. I grew up playing golf and he didn’t know that but he will always say that’s the moment he fell in love. After a fun weekend, David immediately booked a trip to come see me in Houston the following weekend where he asked me to be his girlfriend. The rest is history!

How He Asked

David currently plays for the Colorado Rockies and I am currently a marketing agent for NFL players. My work travel during the summer is never ending and he is constantly on the road for games so we only see each other every few weeks. We had been planning for a while to go to our favorite place, La Jolla during his All-Star Break (a 3-day break during the baseball season) but he was injured this season so there was a lot of uncertainty in his schedule. I was in the process of booking some work travel during the All-Star Break and then he told me he had an off-day that would work out for us to go to La Jolla for one day. It was a crazy time for me with work but I managed to sneak away for the day to meet him in La Jolla since we hadn’t seen each other in weeks.

When we go to La Jolla, we do the same thing every trip — stay at La Valencia, beach all day at my favorite spot, pool in the afternoon, clean up then go down to our spot at the beach to watch the sunset before we go to dinner. It’s the perfect vacation day that we both have no problem always repeating. This day started out just like any other La Jolla day of ours. We spent the day at the beach with some of my best friends, went up to the pool at La Valencia for a bit then showered and got ready to go down for the sunset. David is always super OCD about dinner reservations so the fact he was rushing me to get ready to head down to the beach before dinner wasn’t out of the ordinary. We walked down to our usual spot where I watched every sunset when I lived in La Jolla and later introduced to David. I always told him how much time I spent there and that it was my absolute favorite place in the world.

Once we got down to the beach, I went to sit down on the stairs where we always do but he grabbed my hand and lead me down to the sand. He was wearing sneakers and I began to make fun of him for wearing them on the beach (it’s a known rule you don’t wear sneakers on the beach in San Diego). He was so focused on getting me over towards the shoreline that he ignored my bossy comments. haha. Sure enough the high tide got us and his shoes got soaked but he still wasn’t fazed. As we are walking towards the shoreline, David starting rambling sweet things about us and our relationship and how much he loves me. He’s always super sweet so I STILL wasn’t catching on. It wasn’t until he grabbed both of my hands and said “You know I’ve been wanting to do this for a really long time” and then reached towards his back pocket — yeah, that’s when I pretty much blacked out. He got down on one knee and held out a box which I totally ignored and immediately grabbed him, hugging him and bawling my eyes out like a total sap. I don’t even remember what all he said in the moment until he asked “so is that a yes?” I cried, “yes” and then he asked “do you want to see the ring?” I took a step back, saw the ring and tears exploded again. It was more beautiful than anything I could have ever dreamed of.

As he put the ring on my finger, I heard cheering and looked up to see my mom, my sister and one of my best friends hiding in the bushes. I was again, in complete shock and the water works continued. Meanwhile, David had hired a hidden photographer who captured every single one of these moments (ugly cries and all).

After we hugged and celebrated on the beach, we had a mini photo shoot and David sent my Mom to the restaurant to “see if they could accommodate for the three of them to join us.” After we took a ton of photos, we headed to Herringbone (my favorite spot in La Jolla Cove) to meet my Mom. David lead me upstairs where I was surprised AGAIN by all of my best friends waiting in a private room to welcome us. I screamed and went full girl-mode again running up to each of them for hugs. We drank champagne, ate great food, FaceTimed other family members and celebrated the best night of our lives in our favorite city with some of our favorite people. Our typical La Jolla day turned out to be a day we will never forget!
