Jacqueline + James: Manhattan Marriage Proposal
How We Met, As Told By James: Our story begins in kindergarten. Jacqueline and I grew up in the same town. We attended the same elementary school, but our kindergarten classrooms were right across each other. God has truly blessed me because I didn’t have to search far and wide to meet the love of my life. My future wife was right there in the next classroom.
We were also in the same 1st grade class. It wasn’t until 11th grade in high school when we started to really get to know each other. Jacqueline and I were in the same Pre-Algebra and English class. I always made sure to try to get her attention and find an empty seat next to her. After a few months of hanging out together, I walked Jacqueline home like usual and asked her to be my girlfriend. It happened to be on St. Patrick’s Day! We always ate lunch together in the school cafeteria and after my track & field practices I would always find a way to stop by at her house. Senior year in HS came and went. In the fall of 2007, I was off to Pharmacy school in NY while Jacqueline stayed in NJ to attend Nursing school. The rest is history!
Now, after almost 8 years together, we still make each other laugh every day. She truly is my best friend and brings out the best in me. She pushes me to go further. I wouldn’t be the man I am today if it wasn’t for her.
Even now, whenever I run races she’s always there at the finish line rooting for me. I am so grateful to God for bringing us together and am happy to start this new chapter in our lives. I can’t wait to marry my high school sweetheart!
How He Asked, As told by Jacqueline: About a week before James proposed, he mentioned to me that he got a really great deal on tickets to the Broadway show “Wicked”. I had been dying to see Wicked for the longest, but we never got around to seeing it because we were always busy with work. So when he told me that we would be going the following weekend that we were both off from work, I was super excited!
Before going to see Wicked, James made reservations and suggested that we go and try out a new restaurant for a late lunch. As James was holding my hand, we approached a hotel on E. Houston street. I thought to myself, “this is where the restaurant is?” and was definitely caught off guard. We walked through the beautiful lobby and James said the “restaurant” would be on the top floor of the hotel.
Once we got off the elevator, a musician appeared, playing an acoustic guitar while singing one of our favorite songs. I instantly started crying! The sun was shining so bright and after James said many, very sweet and loving things to me, he got down on one knee and (finally!) asked, “Will you marry me?” My parents were in on the surprise proposal too and met us at the rooftop moments after he proposed! James actually made reservations for the 4 of us at an amazing Indian restaurant in the heart of East Village. Our first night as a newly engaged couple ended perfectly with 2tickets to see Wicked! Happiest day ever.
We are happily engaged and can’t wait to make it officially official!
