Jaclyn and Dustin
How We Met
Dustin went to law school with one of my childhood friends, and through that same circle of friends, he became involved with a breast cancer foundation that is near and dear to my heart. The foundation is led by my mom’s best friend who told me that she had the perfect guy for me. At the time I was living in Manhattan, NY and he was living in Hoboken, NJ, so she gave him my number over email one day in May of 2014. That night he left me a voicemail briefly mentioning how he lives nearby a few close friends of mine, and how my mom’s friend said that I might be interested in grabbing a drink sometime.
(To this day I still have the voicemail saved on my phone). That Friday night I met him at a bar in Hoboken for a drink, and ever since then we have been happily together. We quickly realized throughout exchanging stories that we had been in the same place at the same time a few instances previously, but apparently it took us quite a few years to actually meet! In April of 2016 we moved in together in Hoboken, NJ and we are already looking to adopt a puppy as soon as our schedules will allow!
How He Asked
Dustin surprised me by proposing this past October 22nd (over his birthday weekend) on an observation deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on Sandy Hook in Middletown, NJ. That Saturday our plan was to do whatever the birthday boy wanted which would include a drive through historic Fort Hancock leading to the observation deck with a view of the city, followed by brunch, and a celebration with friends that night. The weather happened to be very chilly and windy, and it was drizzling that morning, so I wasn’t sure that we would get out of the car once we arrived at the observation deck. Little did I know he came prepared with blankets and umbrellas, so we bundled up and headed up the stairs. Dustin loves this kind of thing, so to me it really felt like any other Saturday.
Once we took in the breathtaking view he asked me, “Do you know why this place is so special?” and I answered “No, why?” then he said, “Because this is the place where I’m going to ask you to marry me.” And before I could even process what was happening, he got down on one knee, pulled out the most beautiful ring I had ever seen, and said “Do you wanna do this forever?”
With an outburst of tears and emotion, I of course said “Yes!”
And once I could catch my breath, my first questions were “Does my family know?” and “Are we still going to eat after this?” Lucky for me the answer to both questions were “Yes!” Dustin had gotten my father and mother’s permission beforehand, as well as notified our immediate families of his plan.
Also, because my sister knows me so well, she hinted to Dustin beforehand to make sure that the engagement was well documented in photos. Lucky for me, he had a good friend and photographer Ric of Ric Shaffer Photography there hiding with his camera to capture the moment.
He even caught the park rangers taking our photo for their Twitter account!
I am so thankful for these beautiful photos so that we can look back on one of the best days of our lives and remember it so vividly!
