How We Met

Tyree and I first met as friends about twelve years ago. Over the years, we would cross paths but we really didn’t get a chance to know each other until one fateful night when he accidentally called me. I didn’t have his number saved so I hesitated to answer the call. Something urged me to answer, however, so I eventually did pick up the phone and we were both shocked to find out who was on the other end of the line. What I thought was going to be a brief conversation turned into a two hour catch-up session and it was the highlight of my day. I couldn’t remember the last time someone made me laugh that hard. After that night, I thought we would continue on our merry ways but he called me a couple days later (on purpose this time) to tell me how much he enjoyed talking to me and how much I brightened up his day. From that point, our relationship has continued to grow and blossom into something greater than we ever thought was possible. I can’t express how happy I am that I answered that phone call!

How He Asked

I’ve always told Tyree that I have two requirements for a marriage proposal. First, I want my family to be present and second I want him to get down on one knee. I also wanted it to be a surprise but knowing Tyree, I didn’t think that was possible. Well, I clearly underestimated him.

Tyree proposed during a couples’ trip to Mexico that we planned with his cousins and their significant others. Since my family wasn’t there, I didn’t suspect a thing. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort and on the first day as we were walking to our rooms, a photographer stopped our group and asked if we wanted a free photography session on the resort. Tyree asked if I wanted to do it and I said initially politely declined. Everyone else in the group signed up for the photo session and after hearing their excitement about it, I asked Tyree to go back to find the photographer and sign us up. Since I waited too late to decide, the only session that was available was our last night in Mexico. Everyone completed their sessions and had their photos back by the time of our session and their photos were so beautiful! I was so excited for the session.

During our session, we took photos all around the resort and the photographer gave us instructions on various poses. The photographer then gave me a bottle with a message inside of it and instructed me to read it aloud. Tyree had written the sweetest letter that included lyrics to one of our favorite songs.

When I turned around, he was down on one knee, asking for my hand in marriage.

And his cousins even FaceTimed my family and his parents! Tyree later told me that he planned for the surprise engagement during the photo shoot the entire time that he even called the resort several weeks prior to make arrangements with the photography company. Tyree did an amazing job and made it such a beautiful moment!
