Iris and Andi's Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Proposal
How We Met
“Meeting you was fate, becoming your friend was choice, but falling in love with you was beyond my control.”
As clique as it sounds, Andi and I indeed met by fate. I was meeting a friend for drinks in a fall night in Astoria, New York. As I approached her by the cafe in the corner, she noticed my now fiancé, who happened to be a good friend of her boyfriend’s. As you can guess, we later exchanged numbers through a lovely social media platform, Facebook. A few days later we had our first date (you guessed it- Astoria). The rest is history!
We had a long distance relationship for a while as I was still a student at Boston University and he was working in NYC. Distance makes the heart grow fonder right? About a million and one Skype conversations later, I finally graduated and moved back home to Long Island.
It took almost two years of dating before I introduced him to my father *gasp*! We both come from traditional Albanian families so this is not an uncommon thing. To make a long story short, fast forward almost 5 years and here we are.
Through countless adventures and travels, I knew I had found my best friend- someone to experience this crazy wonderful roller coaster ride called life.
How He Asked
Less than a month before our 5 year anniversary, Andi planned an ice skating night at Rockefeller Center with my sister, cousin, and his brother. As you can imagine bells went off in my head. Being the “planner” of the two I knew something HAD to be up. I pretty much drove my co-workers crazy thinking that has to be the day he proposes! My mother INSISTED it was going to be New Years when I was all dolled up (she knows I like to be prepared but don’t we all?)
On the night of December 20th, we all went to the rink at Rockefeller Center. It just so happened that the minute we stepped on the ice a couple got engaged. Any inkling of suspicion I had that Andi was going to propose that day had diminished. Not to mention he was complaining ALL day about how lazy he was to even head out in the first place!
Tired from the ice skating, we decided to grab a few drinks before heading home- but not before taking a group picture by the Christmas Tree. And that is when the magic happened…
As we were taking pictures he got down on his knee and asked me to marry him! I was so caught off guard that I could not stop crying. I could barely make out the ring through all the tears! The man of dreams had asked me to marry him and I said “YES”! At the perfect time and the most perfect spot in the city. Andi had even hired a photographer to secretly take pictures the entire time! To top it all off he surprised me with both of our parents, who were waiting for us at the Renaissance Lounge in Times Square, champagne in hand.
I could not have dreamed of a more perfect way for him to ask me to marry him. Thank you to my amazing fiancé, family, and friends for the most perfect proposal and night!
