Hope and Alex
How We Met
We went to high school together. He was a senior and I was a freshman. I actually dated his best friend for about 3 years! He secretly always had a thing for me but I didn’t really give him the time of day. Eventually, my ex and I broke up and I leaned on Alex as a friend and went to him with everything. Ultimately I realized that the person who I always really wanted was right in front of me and had always been in front of me and I was too blind to see it.
Since we had known each other for about 5 years at that time, our relationship as a couple moved pretty fast but it was so exhilarating! It was fate; we were meant to be. We actually only dated for about a year when he proposed, however, I had known this man was my future husband from our first real date! He waited for me for about five years through thick and thin and now we’re getting married!!!
How He Asked
We actually went to Europe with his parents this past summer and our last day in Europe was supposed to be spent in Paris. Unfortunately, a lot of things went wrong on the last day and we didn’t make it to Paris on our last day and we had to go straight to the airport from the train station. I didn’t realize why Alex was so upset about not going to Paris as we had already spent the first three days of our month-long trip in Paris. I eventually found out that he was going to propose at their pride parade that day! We advocate for the LGBT community on a daily basis so he knew it would be special for me to be asked at a parade that celebrated those who were a part of the community. When we came back to the United States, I knew he had a ring for me but I didn’t know when he was going to propose so I always on my toes wondering anxiously when I would finally get to say “yes!” The week after we got back from Europe, my family consisting of my mom, siblings, aunt + uncle with their kids and my grandparents along with me and my then boyfriend were all taking a trip to Marco Island, FL as they do every year to spend some quality family time together.
We left on July 16th which also happened to be my grandparents’ 41st wedding anniversary together. I really look up to my grandparents as they have been a really important part of my life and who I’ve become. My fiancé also really looks up to them and we long to have the relationship they have. That being said, Alex decided to propose to me on that first night in Florida on the beach with a gorgeous sunset as our backdrop. He wrote in the sand, “marry me? I love you” and got down on his knee and said, “Hope, 41 years ago, your grandparents started this amazing family that I happily get to be a part of. Will you marry me so we can eventually start one of our own?” I kinda knew it was coming but I still cried!!! I was so happy and so in love! It wasn’t even the proposal that made it so special, it was the fact that I knew I get to be with this special man forever and look forward to our life to come. That proposal was 3 days ago and now we have the rest of our lives to be together!!!
