Heather and Martin's Proposal in Paris
how we met
Martin and I are totally crazy for each other so it is only fitting that we met in a locked psychiatric unit. I was in nursing school and completing clinical coursework while Martin worked as a mental health worker in a local hospital. I actually asked him out on the first date! Fast-forward four years and I work as a nurse in the intensive care unit and Martin is now a marital and family therapist. We love to travel and have been all over the world together.
how he asked
For our four-year anniversary we decided to take a trip to Europe. Initially we had wanted to go to France and the Netherlands, but after checking the weather (I am a San Diego girl who loves sunshine), we decided it might be a bit too cold. Instead we decided on Greece and Italy, with long layovers in Amsterdam and Paris, just so we could get a taste of each place.
After an amazingly romantic trip that included Santorini and the gorgeous Amalfi coast, Martin told me he had a little surprise—He had extended our trip to Paris to be three days instead of a 12-hour layover! When we were planning our trip, Martin had asked me if I wanted to do some professional photography in Paris. We have had professional photography done all over the world, and consider it to be a great souvenir and way to look back on our memories. Even when we don’t have a professional, we always travel with a tripod so that we can take pictures! Of course I said yes and we agreed that Pierre Torset had the perfect style of photography we were looking for. Normally I would have been the one to contact Pierre, but Martin and I had just bought our first house and were doing a complete remodel. Martin offered to contact him and I didn’t even think twice. Little did I know, they started planning what would turn out to be one of the best days of my life!
The day of our photo shoot was supposed to be rainy and cold. However, we woke up to clear skies, a beautiful sunrise, and great weather. Towards the middle of our shoot Pierre set us up near the fountain area of the Trocadero and told us to stand facing each other. I turned around to find Martin down on the ground. At first I was confused and almost told Martin to get up, Pierre had clearly stated STAND facing each other.
Then Martin started to tell me how much he loved me and I finally realized. To be honest, I was so happy, I sort of blacked out and don’t even remember everything he said. Afterwards Martin told me that that he and Pierre had been planning this for months and even had a code phrase to let him know when to propose, “the conditions are perfect.” Looking back it’s funny, because I remember Pierre saying that and thinking, it really is a gorgeous day. It never even entered my mind that this meant Martin was going to propose!
Pierre did such a wonderful job capturing the moment. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect proposal and am so thankful to have images to commemorate it forever! It truly was one of the best days of my life and I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.
Onto the ring! Martin knew that I really wanted to be involved in picking the ring and so he proposed with a stand in ring so that I could choose what I wanted. This was absolutely perfect for me, as I have very particular taste and would have hated to have a ring I didn’t like or would want to “upgrade” later on in life. We are now working on designing the perfect ring for me!
