Hannah and Logan

How We Met

My life was changed forever when we were told I had Leukemia at age 3. Through my treatment, I got involved with a wonderful program for pediatric cancer patients called Smile-a-mile. It is a non-profit organization that started off as a summer camp at Children’s Harbor on Lake Martin. This camp was my family’s brightness through such a dark time in our lives. I met Logan at a weeklong camp session when I was 10 years old. He was 12, and had just undergone treatment for Leukemia as well.

From the moment we met we have been great friends, but I never imagined that things would work out the way they have. At the time, we lived 5 hours away from each other and it wouldn’t have worked with us both in school and being as young as we were. Over the years, things somehow fell into place. Logan excepted a job 20 minutes from me and we started dating in July of 2014. Since then, I graduated high school and started college to become a nurse practitioner. My dream is to work with cancer patients at Children’s of Alabama on the Oncology floor. I want nothing more than to give back to the hospital that Logan and I called a second home for many years during treatment.

Outside of being treated for cancer, Children’s has been there for Logan during other health trials. He contracted a heart condition in 2013 from a rusted fish hook that he stepped on at the beach. Due to chemo effecting the size of his heart, it caused this infection to be more dangerous for him. Thanks to the nurses and doctors at Children’s, his life was saved once again. With all that has happened in his life, he too strives to give back to people with medical needs. He completed paramedic school in May and just accepted a job with the Homewood fire department. It has been a humbling experience to stand by his side and watch him accomplish his goals. He is the smartest, bravest, most amazing miracle, and the fact that I get to be this man’s wife is so surreal.

How He Asked

Smile-a-Mile will always be an important part of our lives together. We still attend camp sessions as adults and have just completed our first summer as volunteers. This past April, we attended a spring fling for the opening of Smile-a-Mile’s brand new office building in downtown Birmingham. There was a firetruck parked across the street at the end of the event, and the firemen were taking people for rides in the bucket. Logan went to check out the truck with a few other people, while I stayed behind with friends. A few minutes later, Logan came over and asked if I wanted to go for a ride in the bucket with him. Of course I did, & we got in along with a fireman to control the bucket. When we reached the top, we were in perfect view of Children’s hospital. The sight was absolutely breathtaking. Given how much it means to us, I asked the fireman to take our picture in front of this beautiful view and I honestly had no idea what was about to happen. When I gave her the camera, Logan got down on his knee and proceeded to say, “Cancer was the best thing that has ever happened to me, because it brought me you, & I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world.” I was full of emotions as he asked me to be his wife forever, and I didn’t hesitate to say, “yes.” We have the date set for January 27th, 2018 at the place where it all started. Smile-a-Mile’s home, Children’s harbor on Lake Martin. We are thrilled to begin this journey of marriage together and to see what wonderful plans God has in store for our future.
