How We Met
I had recently connected with an old friend who wanted to introduce me to this “amazing guy”. Being newishly single I thought, “Why not? What do I have to lose?” We went out clothes shopping for the party he was having at his apartment. I was excited and nervous about meeting this man that was “my perfect match”. My friend and I go to the party and this “perfect match” had been drinking for what must have been a while. He said hello to me and then the conversation was kind of stale. I couldn’t determine if it was from the drinking or if he was shy. Either way I mingled about with the other people from the party thinking, “He can’t be my match he can’t even talk to me…” The party and night ended. To my surprise the next day I received a message from him asking me out to dinner. I agreed to dinner only if it was a double date with my friend and her at the time boyfriend. Also only if we could cook dinner. He agreed. It was the best decision of my life. In his apartment with just the four of us he was able to open up and I could see how genuine and nice he was as a person. From there it was history and we have been inseparable.
How He Asked
For me it was a normal night. It was the weekend before Valentines day and after a long day of working around the house we went out to dinner. We frequently visit The Emerald Rose for two reasons the food is great and it is within walking distance from our home. I should also mention this restaurant is where we had our first real “date”. We had migrated from the comfort of the dining room to the comfort of the bar in our frequent visits. So when we went to the “Rose” he insisted on us sitting in the dinning room. The dinning room was packed and there was a 30 minute wait. Seeing as the bar was open I declined and marched myself to the bar. He barely talked or looked at me for the majority of the night. I thought he was upset about something I had done. He was persistent at checking his phone. I saw a message he said to someone saying, “abort abort abort”. When I asked him about it he said it was a group message that had to do with his family. I thought nothing of it.
Dinner had ended and we were getting ready to ask for the check when suddenly he started talking to me. It was his tone, the look in his eyes, the way he tripped over words and I understood what was happening. He. Is. Proposing. Then I freaked. We were at the bar surrounded by strangers. I told him to stop and take me home. I paid the tab and started to leave. My social anxiety went through the roof. He stopped me in the parking lot got down on one knee and told me to stop because he was doing this and doing this here. He proposed. I cried and said yes. I then cried again. He then told me about his plan. He had created an event and invited all the friends that were at the party when we first met. His goal was for us to have dinner and propose. Then to celebrate all the guests would join us at the bar for a drink. Me going to the bar changed his proposal plan. For the better I think. He got to propose at the restaurant where we had our first date and I got the comfort of knowing it was just us in that moment.
