Hanna and Christopher
How We Met
Two years ago I went out on a date with a man named Christopher. We had a really good time but I just wasn’t sure if I was ready to date anyone yet (yes.. I had just gotten out of a bad relationship). 6 months later he caught my eye again while coaching a college football game. We were playing our school rivalry and we were ahead! Then, the other team took the lead in the last 2 minutes and ended up winning. It was brutal. We were all in shock, but when I looked down on the field Christopher was the first coach/player to shake hands and congratulate the other team. I had just taught a lesson to my 5th and 6th grade students over good sportsmanship and how character is so important. I quoted John Wooden by telling them at the end of a game I shouldn’t be able to tell whether you won or lost. I couldn’t wait to get back to school and share what I had just witnessed! That week I ended up texting him and the rest is history. I love him more each day and I can’t imagine my life without him.
How He Asked
Last Friday, at our school homecoming pep rally, I played musical chairs with some of the other teachers. Shockingly, I won. My kids and I couldn’t believe it! Each teacher got a small participation gift afterwards and when I opened mine it was a heart.
My principal went on to say “Hootie loves you Ms. Sowards!”. My kids went crazy! Then, I turned around to see my sweet Christopher in an owl mascot costume. Words can’t describe the amount of love I felt in that one moment. It took my breath away.
He got down on one knee and I thought the gym was going to explode from excitement. There’s no other group of people I would have rather been surrounded by.
I have the most amazing students, and like Christopher, they have made me a better person. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with this incredible, kind, loving man.
