Hali and Dorian

Marriage Proposal Ideas in Our New Home

How We Met

Almost four years ago, one of my sorority sisters and neighbor at the time asked me to join the co-ed sales and marketing fraternity on campus with her. We were both marketing majors, and she convinced me that it would be “a great resume booster without really having to participate much”. We walked into our first meeting and low and behold, Dorian is standing at the front of the room – he was the president of the organization. I may have thought I was good at hiding my crush, but my sorority sister saw right through that. She would sit in the common area of our dorm building browsing through his Instagram, slyly showing me every picture, saying “he’s such a cutie!” and “you should ask him to formal!” Every girl on the hall knew who he was without ever actually meeting him. It wasn’t until I joined the executive board for the organization that we got to know each other. I remember getting so nervous to talk to him before e-board meetings, only to be followed by feelings of pure excitement when I realized how easy that conversation was. We were the same person in a number of ways and yet I still convinced myself that he was entirely out of my league. I’m eternally grateful that he didn’t think that way since he ended up saying yes to my formal invite (the second time). We’ve been inseparable ever since.

Where to Propose in Our New Home

How He Asked

In January, Dorian had to go back home to Scranton for a weekend to attend a “religious men’s retreat”. It was hosted by his best friend who held a position at a local church at the time. It was based on the book, “Fight: Winning The Battles That Matter Most” by Craig Groeschel. The occasion was wildly believable – he came home telling me all the details of the book and how the retreat was “a life-changing experience”. Little did I know, the trip was to buy the ring, and he listened to the audiobook all the way home just so he could talk about it.

We were in the process of buying a house. It was all we talked about for months – decorating, upkeep, bills. I was so excited for our final walkthrough so that we could take an Instagram-worthy “first-time homeowners” photo. I spent days figuring out the perfect outfit and the perfect spot to take the photo. We get to the house and everything was as we hoped it would be; the small fixes were complete; the staging furniture was out. The house was a true representation of the beginning of the next major stage of life together (in more ways than one, as it turned out).

He pulls a key ring out of his pocket with a decorated key to hold for our Instagram-worthy photo. Turns out that photo never made it to social media because on that key ring was also my engagement ring. The genuine and charming guy I met nearly four years ago was now on one knee asking if I could be his forever, and saying yes was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.

I had always been told that “home” is more about the people you invest your love in than where you live, but I was beyond blessed to walk away with both that day. I’m the luckiest girl in the world to call Dorian, the kindest and most loving man I have ever met, my home.
