Greg and Amanda

how we met

Amanda: Greg and I met at our internship during the summer of 2014. The very first day of orientation, we sat right next to each other. (We wish we could go back in time, looking at how that day went knowing what we know now!) We interned in the same area, getting to first know each other professionally. We both ended up being some of the most outgoing interns, planning group get togethers and weekend trips. We became the best of friends. At the end of the internship, Greg asked to meet up before we both headed back to school. Him to Oklahoma State University, and me to Texas A&M. When we got together, he told me that he really liked me, and would’ve regretted it if he hadn’t told me before we left. We have talked every day since, and now we are here talking about our wedding!

how he asked

Amanda: The saying “when you just know” didn’t seem like it was a real thing until I met Greg. (I certainly knew he knew too when he asked me to look at rings with him!)
We had intentional conversations about not talking about “being married” all the time, so that we could enjoy the season we were in, as well as to keep it a surprise when he decided to pop the question.

We planned a trip to NYC to celebrate our one year of dating. Everyone started to ask me if I thought it was going to happen! I literally had no idea. All I knew was that he wanted it to be a surprise; that was it. The incredible trip came and went, and we were back at work. The day after we got back I decided to bring it up.

Me: “Soooo you wouldn’t believe how many people asked me if I thought you were going to propose in NYC…”
Greg: “That’s too predictable. Honestly I may have to wait until the bonus comes around early next year.”
Me: “Ooh. Okay, I understand”. (Sorta)

That Friday we had planned to go to a sweet little town called Johnson City with two other couples. I had been to Johnson City with my family multiple times growing up. It always was special to me, and Greg and I had gone right after we started dating. They have the most incredible Christmas Lights. EVER. And hot chocolate and hay rides by donation. Needless to say, it’s perfect.

Girls and boys drove separately as we didn’t have a big enough car to fit us all. The traffic was crazy. I just wanted us to be there. When we stopped at a gas station, Greg told me he wasn’t feeling well. That’s a very rare thing, so I gave him some pepto bismol pills. He took them like a champ, and I didn’t think twice about it. We pulled into Johnson City and parked right by the lights. We were the caboose of the group walking on the sidewalk by the lights. Greg told the group to walk ahead, as he needed to sit down since he still wasn’t feeling well. Me going into total concerned mode.. I was trying to get him to take more medicine as we made our way to find a place to sit down. He then went on to tell me that he actually wasn’t feeling that bad..

And then it hit me. He went on to tell me how much he loves me, wants to spend his entire life with me, and wants me to be his wife. He got on one knee, and asked me to marry him. The very best question I have ever been asked, and an answer I gave that I’ve never been more sure of. In my head I can’t stop thinking, “OH MY GOSH THIS IS IT!” It’s a moment you think about your whole life, and I was living it right then. The moment was bliss. It was perfect.

Soon I realized he had hired a photographer to catch our special moment, and with the applause from other spectators, our friends came up to congratulate us. The only part I remember about the lights was how stunning they made my ring shine. It was the perfect proposal, the perfect ring, and most importantly knowing I get to spend the rest of my life with my soul mate.

Greg: When I had originally planned out when I would propose, I had thought it would be in the January time frame. But in late October, I knew that I knew and didn’t want to wait any longer. So I started brainstorming asking her in December. We would be going to New York City for a vacation in early December, but I thought this would be too predictable. So I started putting together the plan to propose the week after our NYC trip. We had visited Johnson City to see the Christmas Lights one year prior, so I asked her if we wanted to go again this year. When she said yes, I knew this would be the place. I planned out the details with a few of my close guy friends and visited the town about a month prior to asking with my photographer.

On the day of, I was nervous. I worked from home, which ended up being a mistake, because I just paced all over the apartment all day long. When the evening came, we drove up with a small group of our close couple friends. They guys drove up in one car, while the girls drove up in another. I started acting like I was feeling not feeling well, so I would have an excuse to pull her away from the group once we were there. She went into full safety mode and made me took medicine at the gas station to make sure I was feeling OK.
Once we arrived, we saw the beautiful Christmas lights and I could feel Amanda had just lit up seeing them. We walked through the trees, and I said I needed to sit down to rest for a second. The guys took the queue, and kept walking forward with their dates. I got Amanda to the spot I wanted to ask, and told her I was actually not feeling that bad.

I looked into her eyes and told her that I loved her, and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I had prepared about 2 pages worth of notes ahead of time, but probably only said 4 or 5 sentences to her. I finally got down on one knee, and asked her to be my wife. With tears in her eyes in total disbelief, she said yes. I got to put the ring on her to an applause from all those watching.

It was a perfect rest of the night, but Amanda almost didn’t look at the lights for the whole evening, because she kept looking back to the ring on her finger.
