Ashley and Grant's Outer Banks Proposal
How We Met: Ashley and I met in the summer of 2009 after both joining a coed-softball team. Even though we both attended James Madison University and graduated only a year apart, we never crossed paths until mutual friends decided to put together a recreational softball team in Arlington, VA. One day we had a 6:00pm game which meant a 90 minute (20 mile!) commute from my office in Maryland to Virginia. Despite leaving work early, I still found myself crawling in the infamous DC traffic. I finally arrived to the field around 6:05. Running from the parking lot (still wearing my work socks), I reached the dugout only to see my teammates upset. The umpire had forced our team to forfeit because we were one player short at game time. “Screw that,” I thought and quickly walked out onto the field to argue with the umpire. There was no way I sat in traffic for over 90 minutes for nothing! Unbenounced to me while I argued with the umpire, I was catching the eye of a girl in the dugout. She later told me she found my persistence to fight for the team, confidence, and work socks with cleats to be attractive. (By the way, I was able to successfully persuade the umpire to reverse his call and allow us to play!)
How He Asked: Our first real trip as a couple was in 2010 to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for July 4th. We spent the long holiday weekend at my parents beach house and watched the fireworks from a private beach with a bottle of red wine. It was the perfect evening. We continued to take a July 4th trip to the OBX every year thereafter and in 2014 our families joined us! After a beautiful day on the beach, we decided to “go see the sunset” atop Jockey’s Ridge (the sand dunes). After what felt like a very long climb, we made it, and the backdrop was everything I had hoped for. Our families were together, so after a few minutes of “ooh-ing and aw-ing” I decided to grab Ashley’s hand and take a “short” walk to the back dune for more privacy. As we walked, all I could think about was how our relationship began, grew, was tested, and matured to the point where asking Ashley to marry me was going to be the easiest thing I’ve done. As I got to the spot, I wasted no time. I immediately started telling her how I felt, our eyes filled with water, and down on a knee I went. She said “YES,” and when I stood back up, we looked at our families to see our biggest fans cheering us on! We rejoined them, snapped a few pictures, and off we went for a sunset dinner on the sound with our families.
It was a truly an amazing vacation and one we will never forget. Although shortened by Hurricane Arthur, we got the job done!
