Grace and Kyle
How We Met
Kyle and I first met when we were 10 years old. My grandparents lived in a secluded area in the woods with a pond behind their house and no houses around except for one house across the pond. New neighbors moved into the house across the pond, so my grandmother and I baked a pie to bring over as a welcoming gift. Walking that pie over into the neighbors house across the pond was the first time Kyle and I laid eyes on each other. After meeting for the first time, we became best friends and played together and talked on the phone often. Fast forward 2 years to when we were 12, and we were going to the movies together, flirting, and holding hands. I’d like to say it was love at first sight, but my diary says otherwise (yes, I still have it). We of course broke up, but we always remained friends.
After being friends for so long, we started dating again when we were 17, and this is where our future began. After we had been dating for a year, we were walking through the woods down a trail and decided to carve our names into a tree. Kyle <3 Grace 3/28/09. We talked about going back to the tree every year and carving the new date. We made it back to our tree two more years to carve the date, but after going off to college together, we never made it back out to our tree.
How He Asked
Kyle and I moved back home from college to start our careers and live with our parents in order to save up money to one day get married and buy a house. We have been together for 7 years, and even after all of this time, we are still very much in love. On December 4th 2015, Kyle and I decided to go out of town for a date night. He wanted to leave early so we wouldn’t have to drive in the dark, so that is what we did. On our way out of town, he suggested going by our tree since it wouldn’t be out of the way. I thought it was a fantastic idea because although we had talked about it many times, we had not made it out to our tree since 2011.
When we arrived at the trail, no one else was around. The woods were beautiful, and the sun was shining through the trees as it began to set. We walked through the woods holding hands and talking about how wonderful our relationship has been these past 7 1/2 years. We made it to our tree, and there were our names still carved into the bark Kyle <3 Grace 3/28/09, 10, 11. We began to reminisce about how young we were when we first engraved our names into the tree. I started to carve the new year into the tree, but before I could begin, Kyle tapped on my shoulder from behind. I turned around, and there he was! The love of my life, my soulmate, my best friend since we were 12, down on one knee asking me to marry him!!!! I had dreamed of this moment for years, and I could not believe it was finally happening. I said yes, and he put the ring on my finger. We cried and laughed, and he held me in his arms and kissed me. We enjoyed the special moment by ourselves, and we carved “Engaged 15” into our tree. It was the most intimate and perfect moment I had ever experienced.
