Megan and Garrett
How We Met
The course of my life was forever changed on September 8th, 2012; that was the day that I first met Megan, my future wife. We were seniors in high school, I went to a public school in Mesa, and she went to a private school in Gilbert (the next city over). I was invited to a combined birthday party for my best friend, Trey, and this girl that he went to high school with named Megan. It’s crazy to think back to the time that I knew absolutely nothing about a girl who would eventually know every single detail of my entire life. I showed up to the party with a few of my other friends expecting to hang out with them and maybe eat some free food, typical teenage guy stuff. When I arrived to the party, Trey introduced me to the birthday girl.
To this day I still remember the feeling I got when I first met her, it was like I was floating on clouds. Everything that was going on around me; all the people, the music, the smells, all of it went away and all I could focus on was this girl standing in front of me. I remember clearly that she had wavy hair and was wearing a teal, white, and pink sundress. It was one of those crystalizing moments that are forever engraved into your brain. The night ended and a little while later I finally mustered up enough courage to send that beautiful girl I met on her birthday a message. To my surprise she messaged me back! PHEW! We eventually exchanged phone numbers and began to text back and forth every day.
Over the course of a few weeks we hung out together with a group of friends and things were going well. Hanging out with friends was great and all, but I wanted to take her out on a date. The only problem was that I didn’t clearly express that it was a date; I more phrased it as going to see a movie. I remember the whole day freaking out about if she was going to bring her friend, if she thought it was a date, or if she even liked me! I had one of my friends on standby ready to get to the movie theater ASAP if she showed up with a friend. But there she was, all alone walking up to me in front of the theater. We saw some terrible movie that I don’t even remember the name of, but it was completely OK because I knew that she liked me and we had just gone on our first date!
Eventually, Fourth of July rolled around and I decided to invite Megan to come watch fireworks with me and some of my friends. Thinking back on it she must have really liked me because there’s no way I would of gone and hung out with complete strangers like she did! Oh well! It worked out for me! We sat in the back of my truck and watched the fireworks light up the night sky. Let’s just say that the fireworks weren’t the only sparks that were in the air that night. It was underneath the bright lights that I asked that beautiful girl who I met on her birthday to be my girlfriend. And the rest, is history!
How He Asked
Garrett contacted one of my best friends (Alex) who is a photographer. Together, they set up a pretend “photo shoot” while we were both home for the Christmas. I didn’t think much of it because she had recently taken our photos over Thanksgiving break and mentioned that she wanted to take some couple shots for her website. So on December 28th, we showed up to the middle of the desert and there was Alex and her friend Kenzie (the videographer). We all headed over to the site where you could see the Superstition Mountains in the background. (What I didn’t know was this location had already been scouted out by Garrett & Alex the day before.) Kenzie said she needed to put a mic on Garrett so it would pic up Alex’s voice for her photography promo video (LOL- why didn’t I question that one?? Nope! Totally just went along with it!
They we actually wanting to record Garrett’s voice for our video when he asked me to marry him) We began taking photos. (Then this is where it gets good). Alex brought a bouquet of red roses, split the flowers in half giving each of us part of them. She said she wanted us to do some poses for Valentine’s Day for her website. There was a pose that she had us do where we both faced away from each other and were each holding half of the bouquet. On the count of three we were each supposed to throw our roses in the air and turn and face each other. “1, 2, 3!” I threw my flowers in the air…turned around…and there my sweet man was on one knee asking me to marry him.
I felt confusion, shock, excitement. I was so surprised that all I could do was cry happy tears.”Is that a yes!?” Garrett asked. (Um duh its a yes!) Once I finally found words..which included, “are you serious?!”, “yes!!”, and “is this real life!?”. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. I know he will continue to love & surprise me each and every day. This is #HowHeAsked
