How We Met
It was the first day of my freshman year of college. I was late to my first class (of course, typical freshman move) I was frantically looking for my classroom and right as I walked in, I realized there were all these eyes on me, and only one seat left to take, it was next to him.
I sat down slightly embarrassed, but he gave me a soft smile and introduced himself. I was so sick that day, I had already been at college for a week prior to classes for soccer preseason and I had caught a cold. I kept sniffing throughout the class, he would look over every once and a while after I would sniff. He leaned over and said, “are you sick?” and I simply nodded.
Then after class finished, we walked out together, small talking and getting to know the basics, and then he paused and asked, “so are you really sick or just allergies?” I was kind of startled. Seemed like an abrupt and irrelevant question but I proceeded to tell him it was a cold. He flashed a cute half smile then looked at me and replied, “oh, well I hope you don’t get me sick” and that was that. I couldn’t believe this random guy I had just met had the audacity to tell me he didn’t want
I couldn’t believe this random guy I had just met had the audacity to tell me he didn’t want me spread my germs. I quickly ran back to my dorm where I told my RA and roommate of this inconsiderate guy, even dramatically called my mom. But I must’ve found that odd humor and half smile irresistible because it’s almost 4 years later and I am lucky enough to sit by his side for the rest of my life.
How He Asked
He had been picking up random valet jobs and the week before the proposal, I was with him when he received a text saying that they needed him to valet both next Friday and Saturday (the weekend of the proposal). I was a little bummed but he said well, we can grab lunch together next Saturday since I’ll be busy valeting! A whole normal week went by and Saturday came, he took me out to my favorite restaurant in town because we hadn’t been there all semester.
A whole normal week went by and Saturday came, he took me out to my favorite restaurant in town because we hadn’t been there all semester. Afterwards, we went for a walk in our downtown park and then he had to take me home so he could get ready for his valet job. As he dropped me off at my house, he yelled after me “Hey! Maybe we can hang out tonight when I’m done!” I replied, “what are we going to do?” he said “we’ll figure that out later.”
He drove off and I walked in my door, and all my housemates were sitting at our kitchen table. That never happened. They were oddly quiet. That also never happened. But I had a fear of missing out so I quickly ran over to them to see what was going on, but they told me to look on the counter. I turned around to see
I turned around to see vase of sunflowers with a card, telling me the day was finally here and to go to where we first met” I quickly understood what was happening. All my housemates began to squeal as I frantically changed outfits.
My best friend dragged me into her car to take me on a scavenger hunt that my fiance had strategically planned out. There were six different locations, all of which had an envelope with a note and a photo inside.
Each of the notes took me through the story of our relationship, told in the perspective of a narrative always referring to me as “that girl” or “her” but never by name.
The photos were of us at different locations in Chattanooga, TN and those lead me to the next locations in the scavenger hunt.
At each location ready to hand me the next envelope, were people who have been super important and influential in our relationship such as close married friends of ours, his brother and his family, his sister, two of my housemates, and my sister and niece.
He was at my last location which was Point Park, atop of Lookout Mountain, TN where he stood in the middle of the park waiting for me. I met him, grabbed his hands and could hardly contain my excitement as he got down on knee and asked me to marry him!
Our good friend caught some beautiful photos and afterwards, we went back to his house where all our family and friends awaited us for a surprise engagement party.
My family had driven 10 hours and his 4 hours to celebrate in this special day with us, we were so lucky to have so many people surround us on that day!
