How We Met

David and I met in church after a pretty painful period in my life. Meeting him was like a breath of fresh air—he was a relentless source of encouragement and support. During the first few months of our courtship, we were long distance. We started talking just a few days before I left for a 3-month internship in Kansas City, Missouri. We spent that summer getting to know each other over the phone, texting and late night calls. When I came back to New York, it would be just a few short weeks before I would leave again to study abroad in Italy for my second to last semester of college. These few weeks were when we shared many firsts—a meal, holding hands, and some kisses. Then, I was off for another 4 months in Italy. David made me a video nearly every day to sing me a song and remind me that I was loved.

To be honest, even at this point I was uncertain of entering into a serious relationship. Through his patient perseverance, however, I found myself falling in love with him. By the end of my trip, I was growing so impatient to see him that I shelled out a few extra dollars to get on an earlier flight. Ours is not a fairy tale romance. We struggled through some pretty difficult times and faced some uncertainty. Through ours trials, I came to find my life partner and the love of a lifetime. We applied to law school together and began on this journey together. This period has undoubtedly been one of the most difficult challenges David and I will collectively and individually overcome. Through it all, David has loved me with a love that sets me free. His love for me is reflective of God’s love for us, unceasing and full of grace. We will graduate this May and at this point, it has been 6 years since we’ve been together. A marriage is an eventuality waiting to happen.

How He Asked

On Saturday morning, a few of my friends knocked on my door to take me on a scavenger hunt that would change my life. At each location was someone who I loved dearly. They each held a clue that would lead me to the next location. Each point reminded me of how far we had come and all the good memories we created together.

The first clue was to go the first place we met. Church. The second clue was to go to the place where we had our first meal together. Burger King. The third clue was to go to the place where we first held hands. A neighborhood park. The fourth clue was to go the place where we first learned that “we knew nothing about the world and hard work.” Law school. The fifth clue led to a new first—coordinates that would lead me to Lullwater Bridge in Prospect Park. There, David would be waiting for me.

As we were making our way from the parking lot to the bridge, we took a wrong turn. We could either circle back or hop a short fence as a shortcut. So my girls and I did the ladylike thing and hopped the fence. It’s crazy because I did not think that I’d be nervous at all because I had been anticipating this day for so long. As I was making my way to David, I welled up with emotion—we were surrounded by people who loved us (enough to brave 30 degree weather and traffic on a Saturday morning)–and he would say the words I had waited so long to say yes to.

As I made the final approach and he was in my sight, I started to cry with my ugliest cry face. True to self, he asked me if I liked his outfit, to which I answered, “No” because he wore my least favorite beanie. I nearly blacked out when he uttered the words, “Will you marry me?”

And as I sobbed the word, “Yes,” our friends cheered. Afterwards, we celebrated with pizza and wine. I could not have dreamed of a better day.
