Ethan and Lelia
how we met
We first met at Ethan’s older brother’s wedding on September 20, 2014. We both seen each other but never spoke that evening. My best friend Kristen teased me saying, “There’s your future husband!” Recently getting out of another relationship I replied, “Definitely not! I’m not ready and he’s not my type.” A few more teases that evening to me and that’s as far as it got. I was currently a coworker with my beat friend and the newly married bride, Kayla, whom was now Ethan’s sister-in-law. Kristen brought it up at work when all three of us were there and Kayla thought it was a fantastic idea to set us up! Kristen knew more about the recent breakup I had so she knew I wanted to wait longer before even dating anyone else. However, Kayla was determined to make this happen so she spoke to Ethan about me only about a week after the wedding. Apparently Ethan also thought it wouldn’t work because I wasn’t his type! (He didn’t tell me this until months later….we both have a good laugh about it now! I guess opposites do attract!) Regardless, he decided to message me on Facebook on October 1, 2014 to ask me, “So did you enjoy the wedding?!” We spoke about how it was my first ever wedding and I had a great time despite working that evening. We also talked a little about ourselves based on questions asked.
After a few failed attempts of asking me for my number nonchalantly, he asked bluntly and we ended up texting for a while. At this time I am still anti-relationship and I was planning on friend-zoning him from the beginning. Kayla decided it would be best to meet each other at a bonfire at her place on October 11, 2014. It was supposed to be Ethan and I, Kristen and her fiancé Alex, as well as Kayla and Lukis. Once I arrived there, I was approached by Kayla and she informed me of the worst news you could get on a first meeting. His parents were there!!! Yes, I officially met Ethan and his parents the exact same night. Let’s just say I had a few more Mike’s Hard Lemonades than originally planned. Once his parents left, it unbelievably became even more awkward when Kristen and Kayla kept making eye contact and giggling just because we were sitting next to each other. That continued for the entire night. Then, they were teasing us to hold hands which obviously did not happen.
As we were closing in on the night, Ethan and I were more annoyed than anything so we were just going to go our separate ways and leave it at that. However, Kayla and Kristen again taunted me about getting a picture with him. I said no and that I was ready to go home. Kayla turns to Ethan and says, “Lelia said she wants a picture with you!” as she’s laughing. I was so pissed at this point. I took the picture and drove home thinking about how HORRIBLE that night went. When I got home, I received a text from a clearly annoyed and angered Ethan about how it went and we both decided that next time, it was just going to be us. Since I was so over this ‘dating’ thing with Ethan, I said why not Monday after I get out of nursing clinical? He agreed but had no plan of attack. So, that Monday after clinicals, I drove to his place, which is where he still lived at home with his parents. Yes, date number 2 involved meeting his parents again. I did not change after clinicals and showed up to his parents in my scrubs. As soon as I got there, he said, “Keep your shoes on, we’re going somewhere.” I thought, “Oh thank you!” I complimented him on his car and we had small talk again. We reached the destination and it was a little trail in a cute wooded area.
At that time I didn’t see it as cute though. I made sure to stand my ground so he would not try to put his arm around me, hold my hand, nothing! I’m sure he felt the lack of trying on my end. We walked through, talking more about school, since we were both students and we even got a good laugh out of him tripping a few times! On the way home we were all muddy. I tried my best not to get his car dirty because you could tell he really took care of it. We talked some more and he explained that his mom was making dinner and I was more than welcome to stay. I was hungry so I said sure, why not? We got back to his place and there was still some time to kill. He asked me if I wanted to watch a movie for the time being. Even though scary movies are my favorite, I told him comedy, which is a close second, because I didn’t want to give him a reason to touch me still. (I was extremely guarded if you can’t tell!)
We began watching a funny movie and a out half way through it was time for dinner. I got to meet his family on a more personal basis and it wasn’t as bad as you would think. They were nice and really seemed interested in getting to know me better. That was the moment I actually relaxed a little bit. We returned downstairs and finished that movie. We just sat there and talked and talked and talked and I loved every ounce of it now that I was feeling more open. It was about 8pm at this point and he asked me if I wanted to watch another movie. I was surprisingly open to him now so I said I wanted to watch a scary movie. It was in fact a very scary movie that I had never seen. About half way through of him not receiving my cues to hold my hand, I finally just gave him my hand. He was so nervous that he did not move an inch the entire movie after that. Once the movie was done, we sat and talked even more! At this point I was completely open to getting to really know this guy. He was so different from the rest. By the time our night ended it was 3am!!! I was there for just under 12 hours and it did not feel like it at all. After that night, we were inseparable. We made it official at midnight between October 30, 2014 and October 31, 2014.
How he asked
Ethan and I began taking dance lessons as referred by our great friends Alex and Kristen on October 1, 2015. We loved it and decided to stick with it! We were preparing our first ever dance performance at our studios Newsome Twosome which happened to be Disney themed. After trying to decide which song to do, we ultimately decided to do “Love is an Open Door” from the movie Frozen. We did months of prepping for this performance! It was finally the day for the performance, August 5, 2016. Once the listing of performers was made, I almost had a panic attack and cried because we were DEAD LAST to go. I was so confused because usually the last performers student-wise are on a higher dancing level than us. We are barely past newcomer level. I was so nervous and confused.
About half way through the evening, I had this small thought of maybe tonight was the night! I gave him the ring over 9 months ago! I quickly disregarded it because there was no way he would be able to propose in front of that many people. Ethan is pretty shy. It was finally our turn to dance. We were both so nervous that we rushed through our routine but I was just glad it was over! As we’re walking back, he looks at me and tells me to hold on a second as he walks toward Kristen and Alex. At that same time I heard the song “Marry Me” by Train playing in the background. I instantly broke into tears!
Everyone around us is cheering so loudly and he gets down on one knee. After a lot more cheers and crying from me, he sort of had to yell, “Will you marry me?” in order for me to hear him! I quickly nodded yes! It was perfect!!! My own little fairytale.
