Esther and Roy

Screen Shot 2015-02-09 at 1.38.41 PMHow we met: In the summer of 2010, my friend’s boyfriend, James, invited me to join him and his friends on a road trip to New York City for the weekend. Thinking nothing of it, I obliged. I mean how could I turn down an end of summer road trip especially one to the Big Apple? Little did I know that the whole gang schemed to set Roy and I up. At first, I was oblivious to any attempts that were made, any gestures or words that were exchanged, but as time went on, the chemistry was obvious. By the end of the trip, I had mistakenly left some small items in his car (Roy still thinks it was intentional) and it was an excuse to meet up alone. That’s where our story starts.

How He Asked: My best friend, Ashley, and I have been taking an annual trip for the past few years as we only see each other once a year. This year, we found ourselves on a road trip to the beautiful Pacific North West (Oregon Coast, Portland and Seattle, Washington).

After a week together, we were reaching the end of trip and making our drive back to Seattle. Ashley rarely makes specific requests when we travel as I am always the planner, but she really wanted to see the view of the city, take some nice photos and apparently see some “trains” pass by at a certain time at Seattle’s Gas Works Park. There was so much traffic getting out of Portland, as soon as we reached the freeway, Ashley was speeding the whole way. Since we loved taking photos, I just thought she really wanted catch the sunset. I even suggested to make a visit to the park the next day, but she played cool and said, “we’ll see.”

We arrived right as the sun was setting, and she was right, it was a beautiful sight to see. The colours, the playful people, and the fresh scent of the West Coast air is still something I remember that day.

She insisted we get closer to the water and so I started taking photos of her there, and then she of me. I immediately looked at my phone to look at the photos, and in the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of someone passing by me.

There stands Roy, with his hair slicked back, shoes shined, and shirt tucked in. We had been dating nearly 4 years and we only discussed our ideas of marriage on our anniversaries and only to the extent that we knew we would eventually get married in the future and that I’d have to be patient. So, as you can see, I was shocked. I even asked, “What are you doing here? Are you going to hang out with us?” He looked at me and there he was on one knee.

I remember Roy asking me if I said “Yes,” and a group of gals enjoying their picnic nearby yelling, “She said Yes!” I’ve learned that patience has helped us through a whole lot in our relationship and I’m glad he was able to keep the element of surprise in his proposal with the help of my best friend. Now, our biggest adventure lies ahead.
