Eryn and Matthew
How We Met
Back in 2006 we were both performing at an event at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ. We both hung out and watched each others performance that day. Matt had recently won a big guitar player contest through Guitar Center called Guitarmagedeon. Someone told me that his name and about his recent win. I saw him standing on the other side of the bar by himself and decided that I should go introduce myself and let him know that I enjoyed his performance. This is out of character for me because I am a very shy person. That was probably the first and last time I ever introduced myself to a stranger. I’m really glad that I did because we became immediate friends! It ended up being love at first sight for me and he made me chase him around for almost 10 years before he “smartened up” as he says. Now we never leave each others side.
How He Asked
My fiance and I are both NJ musicians. Two days before Christmas 2016 we were scheduled to perform a Holiday show at a venue called The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park where we met 10 years prior. The last song of the first set I was singing “Santa Baby” a song that I had released the previous year as a Christmas single. We extensively rehearsed this song because I do somewhat of a unique version of it. We were performing this song when I came up to the lyric “Forgot to mention one little thing, a ring.” The song suddenly stopped. I turned around confused and a little annoyed thinking that the band messed up the song. Then I realized Matt was handing his guitar off to someone. I thought then maybe there was a technical issue. At least until I realized that the bass player was handing him a ring box. Then it dawned on me what was happening. Matt was talking over the microphone to a packed venue hanging on his every word and wondering why he had stopped the song.
He said “Here we are back at The Wonder Bar and I can’t imagine another day without you” Then he got on his knee and said “Will you marry me?”
The audience went CRAZY!!! I of course started crying, then said yes, then I said “You’re not going to make me sing now right?” Once I was finally able to unwrap my arms from him and realize there were other people in the room again. I saw my father, who I didn’t know was there, walk up and he congratulated me. It was then that I found out that Matt had taken my father out for a beer the week before and asked him for my hand. Then I texted my 13 year old daughter exclaiming that Matt had asked me to marry him and her response was “I knew he was going to. I’ve known for weeks.” Apparently he asked my daughter first, then my father, and then me!
