Erin and Paul
How We Met
Paul and I went to high school together. He was a year older than me and we didn’t know each other while we were in school, even though I was a cheerleader and he was on the football team. His mom was actually my math teacher! After college, I was at a local bar and I saw him across the room. I was feeling especially bold, after all I was wearing white pants AFTER Labor Day. I waltzed on over to him and said, “I know you!”. He replied that he knew me, too, he told me what my name was, but all I knew about him was that he had played football. We talked for a bit and then my friends wanted to head out. I had him give me his number and then before I left I called his phone to be sure he gave me the right number! We tried to meet up a few times over the next couple of months, but nothing worked out. We finally had our first date! I was so nervous, but I knew immediately that he was the one! He wasn’t as sure about me, but I grew on him!
How He Asked
We just sold our house in Durham, NC to move to Asheville for his knew job, so we were trying to hit all of our favorite spots before the move! Saturday was Chapel Hill for a few of our favorite places. The weather wasn’t supposed to be great, but Paul made sure we grabbed umbrellas. As we drove over to the restaurant, Paul asked me why Chapel Hill was special to me. I went on about how my parents met there, the nostalgia it has held for my whole life, and how I love those Tar Heels. He asked if we should park near the quad, since parking is usually difficult. I agreed and so we parked and began walking through the quad. The Old Well came in to view and Paul asked if I knew the importance of the spot. I explained that students drink out of the well for good luck. He suggested that we go up and take a drink. As we got up there, a small group was already there, which unbeknownst to me made Paul second guess if he should do it right then. They started to walk away and I took a sip from the fountain. When I turned around, Paul was on his knee! I apparently told him to, “stop it!”. I started crying immediately and was shaking so much, I thought that I might collapse. I didn’t hear most of what he had said, but he kissed my hand and then he revealed a ring! I’m not even sure I said yes, I just kissed him! As we celebrated and I tried to gather myself, as I wasn’t wearing waterproof mascara, the small group that had walked away approached and said they had taken some photos. That was the icing on top of the cake for this already perfect day!
