Erica and David
How We Met: It all began at Rutgers where we met at a going away party for a mutual friend. I’ve always thought that the unplanned, spontaneous nights end up being the most fun and that night was living proof. At the party Dave and I met and hit it off. We kept in touch and spoke to each other frequently. As we became closer as friends, Dave came to visit me at Stony Brook, where I was attending college. A few months down the line the trips happened more often and I realized that I had feelings of more than just friendship for Dave. I was not looking for a relationship at the time but as they say “your heart wants what it wants”. We started to talk more and went on our first date…
From there, the rest was history. Texts turned to phone calls, trips to Stony Brook & New Jersey happened more frequently, we went on more dates, we shared our pasts and hopes for the future and “I really like you”s turned into “I love you”s. They say “some of the best relationships start as friendships” and that couldn’t hold truer. What drew me to Dave was his sense of humor. What made me love him was everything else.
How He Asked: The magic all happened in Costa Rica where we were on summer vacation for our 5 year anniversary. Prior to our trip we had been making plans to go ring shopping. Before we left Dave kept asking me when we would go (little did I know he already had the ring made and was waiting until our trip to pop the question!). Costa Rican sunsets are known to be absolutely breathtaking so when he kept insisting we go down to the beach to catch the sunset I had no idea I was in for more than some beautiful scenery. We missed the sunset the first few nights and my poor fiance-to-be later told me he was so nervous about not only popping the question but with having to hold onto the ring each day that passed by. Sunday night we made plans to go out to dinner and celebrate our anniversary…but first a stop at the beach to take pictures and watch the sunset. We walked down to the most amazing view. We took a few pictures and found someone on the beach to take a picture of us together. Dave passed off the camera to her and whispered something but I thought nothing of it (little did I know he was asking her to snap away!). He came back to me for our picture together and as we smiled he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I was in complete shock, heart racing, hands literally shaking and speechless (except for the words “are you serious” which I must have said at least 10 times). Once I was able to catch my breath and articulate my words again-of course I said yes!!
