The Cutest Couple Ever Gets Engaged on Surprise Paris Trip
How We Met: We met through my cousin and his best friend at his college house party. We both had instant attraction to one another, but we kept our distance because we went to different undergraduate universities and were too scared to pursue one another. The first time we did end up hanging out together, he was so nervous he ended up accidentally breaking the faucet and spraying water all over me.
We have had a special connection ever since December 17th, 2010.
How He Asked: We are both getting our masters at our respective universities, in which we are so far from each other (New York & Arkansas). We had been planning for a while to visit his hometown with each other and our parents. All along, he had the biggest surprise trip up his sleeve, however.
So, the morning of our supposed road trip to his hometown, he surprised me and said we were going to “Chicago”. He said that both of our parents were going to meet us out there too and that we were going to have a great time. I was ELATED, but little did I know, that was just a layover for us.
We got to Chicago, where he said that we needed to wait for our parents to arrive. While sitting in the terminal, he handed me a passport. Then he handed me a set of itineraries. I was freaking out! It said we were going to PARIS!!!! I was in shock! I felt “surprised” out.
Little did I know, that was the beginning of all the surprises. We flew to Paris, and arrived at our hotel at around 9 A.M. We took a nap and around 12:30 P.M. our hotel phone rang saying they had a package for me. I quickly went downstairs and found a package with my name on it and cards placed inside. Rob was not saying anything at the time. The concierge also handed us two Vespa Scooter helmets and said, “Enjoy Paris!”.
I did not know WHAT WAS GOING ON! Rob (I assumed, but he was just smiling the whole time) had arranged a scavenger hunt for us to go on through Paris with every single envelope that was inside the package. The envelopes had my initials “D.L.W.” on the front of them, and a heartfelt message on the inside of them that pertained to “us”.
We went to a plethora of famous Paris attractions: Place del le Concord (Fontaine Des Mers), Sacre Couer (Church at the highest point in Paris), Le Consulat (Restaurant), Le Mur des Je t’aime (A Wall that had “I love you” written on it in over 250 plus languages), Moulin Rouge, Les Pont Des Arts (Love Lock Bridge), and Le Crazy Horse (#1 Cabaret show in the World).
I was completely swept off my feet. We had an adventure trying to drive our scooter in Paris’ crazy traffic and breaking the language barrier. It was a complete blast to be with the man I love in the city of Love. After we arrived at each place, I would get to open a new card to see where I would be going.
After the Cabaret show at Le Crazy Horse, we went to go get something to eat at a nice restaurant. There was no more scavenger hunt (to my knowledge) and I was so tired from being out all day (especially with jet lag kicking in). It was around 10:15 P.M. and Rob was getting a little uneasy, asking the waiter to hurry with our food. I asked him why and he said he wanted to go to the Eiffel Tower for the light show at 11:00 P.M. Apparently there is a light show that goes off every hour on the hour at night, and 11pm was the last one for the night.
I didn’t think anything about it, I was super excited because the whole time we had not gotten a chance to see the Eiffel tower up close. We hurried up and ate, and ended up getting a ride to the Palais de Chaillot (platform with best view of the Eiffel Tower) from the bouncer from Le Crazy Horse. It was a dream come true. We ended up getting there at 10:55 P.M. and stood directly in front of the Eiffel Tower waiting to be awed by the light show. He was standing behind me, with his arms around me, and I didn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.
At 11:00 P.M. he handed me a card. I was in a little shock, because I knew the whole time he didn’t have any card or box or anything on him, just his wallet. I opened up the card and on the inside it said “Danielle….. Will you marry me?”.
I was in TOTAL SHOCK! I turned around to him and he was on one knee, with a big Tiffany’s blue box and he grabbed my hands and asked me “Will you marry me”. I couldn’t say anything but just kiss him over and over and said “OF COURSE”.
We hugged and literally over 100 people were cheering us on. He showed me the front of the card, and it said “D.L.E” (his las name initial) on it, I burst into tears.
He then pointed out one by one all of our very close friends who came all the way from Texas to Paris, to help his (our) dream come true. I couldn’t believe my eyes and felt so overwhelmed with love. Everything started to come together on how packages arrived, letters magically appeared, and big blue boxes could have snuck past my sight.
The love I felt was overwhelming, I must say my fiance did an AMAZING JOB!
