Emily and Nathaniel

How We Met

Nathaniel and I grew up two blocks away from each other our whole lives in the small town of Saltaire, Fire Island in New York. We probably passed each other on our bikes or in the small grocery store for 20 years barely noticing each other. We even both worked at the same store, but missed each other by one year. Of course, all it took was the power of the internet to bring us together when we saw each other online one day, recognizing that we were both from Saltaire.

All it took was one message back in January 2015 and the rest was history! It turned out that my grandparents, who have lived in Saltaire since the 1970’s and his parents, who have been living on Fire Island for about 30 years, docked their boats right near each other and had be acquaintances for awhile.

Since then, we have had a whirlwind relationship, doing absolutely everything together. We are each other’s best friends, and the fact that our families knew each other already makes it even more special. Saltaire and Fire Island mean so much to us that to find someone who appreciates it as much as we both do is probably the most special part of our relationship!

How He Asked

I am probably the world’s worst traveler, but after 2 years of dating and working extremely hard at our jobs and school, Nathaniel and I agreed that we deserved a vacation somewhere nice since we really had never taken a big trip together. Since I am terrified of flying, we decided to book a trip to Sandals in Nassau, Bahamas, since the flight from New York is only 2.5 hours. It seemed so surreal to me, but April quickly approached and we got ready to go on our vacation. We were only going for a few days so I was not overwhelmed by the traveling, which ended up being perfect. We had two great days, including a private professional photo-shoot to document our trip. Nat told me that he had booked us a private, candlelight dinner on the beach for our last night at the resort and I was so excited because it was the perfect way to end the most perfect trip.

On Friday, April 14th, we were getting ready to go to dinner and walk down to the beach when I looked out the balcony of our room and said to Nat that I thought it looked like it was going to rain. We decided to walk down to the location of our dinner anyway and no sooner did we get to the beach that is started to pour! We quickly ran into a building where we ran into our favorite photographer from our photo-shoot, who he had sneakily asked to come take our picture at our dinner that night. Our head waitress for our dinner found us and said that our table had been ruined, but that she could either reset it up, or move us into an open air restaurant right on the beach, that would still be private for us. Nat said he still wanted to sit on the beach, but we soon realized that the weather just didn’t want to cooperate! He was freaking out and I didn’t understand why, I thought that as long as we got to eat our dinner privately I didn’t care where we sat! Finally, we were seated in our own private restaurant.

Before I could process what was going on, Nat came over to me, gave me one long-stemmed rose, and was on one knee asking me to marry him! I turned around and our photographer was there to capture every moment of it. It was so surreal and really didn’t hit me until we got home. Although we are young, we have both never been so sure of anything in our lives and cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together!
