Emily and Steven

How We Met

Steven and I met in our freshman year of high school during our drivers ed. Class. He was quiet and shy, while I was an outgoing and loud girl looking for someone to listen. There was something special about him. He was more mature than the other boys in my class and he had a witty sense of humour when he decided to talk.

We sat next to each other one day in drivers and I talked his ear off. From the little bit that he said I gathered that he was a band kid and spent most of his time in the band room so I started spending my lunch hours with him and we just never stopped talking.

We graduated highschool and moved to Brandon, Manitoba to work on our degrees. I went into psychiatric nursing and he went into music education. Most people believed that university would be the end of us, but it truly felt like a new beginning. I truly believe he will forever be my best friend.

How He Asked

Steven proposed for the first time at the end of August  2016 after we had been apart for 10 weeks. He had received a job in Quadra, British Columbia as a music instructor for the Sea Cadet summer camps. It was by far the hardest thing we’ve faced as a couple, but we pushed through.

At the end of his term my mom, sister and I flew out to meet him and visit my grandparents who lived out there. Steven and I had our own guest house which was so cute! We spent the night catching up and went to bed late.

I woke up in the morning to shower and when I came back to the room to change, he had spread sunflowers on the bed with a ring box in the centre.

He was standing on the rug smiling at me. He told how being away had made him evaluate how much he loved having me in his life and he wanted me to be with him forever.

He cried through the whole thing! He reached for the ring box, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I of course said yes!!

But I had a surprise for him too. Last summer he gave me a promise ring and I loved the gesture so much that while he was away this summer I picked up a ring for him.

After he got up I went over to my bag and pulled out my ring for him, I told him how much I loved him and then I got down on one knee and I asked him to marry me too.

He thought that was wonderful and said yes too. When we finished crying he told me that there was more. The ring he proposed with wasn’t my ring.

My mom had helped him pick the ring while he was away, but the setting hadn’t come in on time and so the jeweller took my diamond and put it in a place setter setting until mine arrived.

Fast forward to October 2016 and we’re in the middle of midterm season. I’m stressed and tired and I miss my ring as we had taken it to Winnipeg to the jeweller for the ring to be set. He was going to mail it back when it was done, but I didn’t know when that would be.

I come home at lunch completely tired and done with the day and I walk in to a completely clean kitchen (lovely surprise). Steven is waiting for me with a box of my favourite cereal.

On the back of the box he had written “a prize in every box”. I open the box and there’s a ring box, my heart leaps into my chest as I open the box… and there’s a sticky note!! No ring!!

I read the sticky note and on one side it has a reason or a thing that Steven loves about me and on the other side is a clue. I solve the riddle and find the next clue in the living room and this continues on for 9 more clues until I reach our bedroom.

The final clue is on my Harry Potter book. It tells me to turn to page 284.

I open to the Unbreakable Vow chapter and there is a letter full of wonderful words that made me bawl my eyes out. The back of the letter tells me to turn around and Steven was down on one  knee with my ring and he asked me again to marry him.

I said, “Yes!!” And hugged him for a very long time.  I never expected to be proposed to twice but, both times were absolutely perfect.
