How We Met

Pat and I met June 13th, 2011. We didn’t meet at a bar, or a party, or even through friends. We met at the wonderfully decadent and historic Belvedere Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. It was an event in the Belvedere’s grand ballroom celebrating the famed Documentary film director Ken Burns and the release of his newest film, Prohibition. At the time, I was working as an intern for Maryland Public Television and volunteering at the event. Pat was a guest at the event, but also worked at Maryland Public Television in a different department (our paths had never crossed previously). We made eye contact, he said hello, and then we talked for hours. We had so much in common, chatting about our love of sports (go Ravens and Orioles!), video games, dogs, cars, the city of Baltimore, our families, our career dreams in TV and film, and so much more. At the end of the night he walked me to my car like a true gentleman, but forgot to ask for my number! Instead, earlier in the night he had asked for my Words with Friends username (serious throwback). We started chatting over the Words With Friends messenger in between games, started spending daily lunches together, and got routine snowballs after work (spearmint flavored for him, egg custard for me- both with marshmallow fluff in the middle of course!). We went on our “official” first date late July of 2011 and the rest is history!

How He Asked

I am a huge sucker for celebrating holidays, I think it might have something to do with my birthday being on the 4th of July. Valentines Day has always been one of my favorite holidays to celebrate. I just love love! So, Pat and I decided we should go to one of our favorite restaurants called The Brewer’s Art in Baltimore. It’s great because it’s right down the street from where we first met at The Belvedere Hotel. For years I have loved taking pictures in front of the hotel because not only did our story begin at this beautiful place, but standing below the neon lights of the “The Belvedere” also makes for a great picture! The plan for Valentines Day was to grab drinks at the Belvedere’s Owl Bar before dinner, and then head to dinner down the street. On our way out of the building after drinks, we found this sweet couple to take our photo. Baltimore was experiencing a polar vortex at the time, and it was probably only 10 degrees outside. When I was turned to the camera ready to pose for a photo, Pat turned to me, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. I ugly cried. Like Kim Kardashian ugly cried. Immediately after the proposal I wanted to call my family, but Pat urged us to hurry to the restaurant because of the cold. We got to the restaurant, only to find my parents and Pat’s parents sitting at our table! I ugly cried again. The whole night feels like the craziest whirlwind of overwhelming love and happiness. It still feels like a dream, and I don’t want to ever wake up.
