Emily and Mike
How We Met
I met Mike for the first time while I was on a recruiting trip for a college in eastern North Carolina when I was 17 (Mike was already running for the team that was recruiting me). He was in the library with another one of my soon-to-be teammates when we were introduced, and I shyly said hello to both. I got butterflies the first time we met, and I thought about him during the entire recruiting trip. Lucky for both of us, I committed to run cross-country at that college. Once the fall came around, we were both running on the team together and kept each other laughing constantly. We became fast friends and started dating in no time. Our personalities and sense of humor meshed perfectly. Many of our friends joke that I found my soulmate before I even knew how to get to all of my classes! Mike is two years older, so he graduated and went off to get a job in Raleigh while I was still in school. During my last two years of college, Mike would drive to see me most weekends or meet me at my races as my number-one fan. Once I graduated, Mike helped me apply to graduate school, land a job, and transition into the “real world!” He is simply the most genuine, hard-working, and kind person I know.
How He Asked
Fast-forward four and a half years, Mike planned a romantic beach weekend in June. Now that we are both graduated from college and working, we love to escape to the beach! He booked us a place on Topsail Island, which is a sleepy, little beach town that we both adore. We would run away to there often when we were in college. Leading up to the beach weekend, Mike booked me an appointment to get my nails done (which I never do) and get a massage! I just thought it was a nice gesture at the time, but he later explained that he wanted to make sure I felt like a princess when he proposed. On Friday evening, we had dinner on the apartment’s porch, overlooking the ocean. We spent the evening joking, laughing, and just soaking up the ocean and our love. Mike convinced me that we needed to go take some pictures of the sunset as it was just too pretty to pass up. So I grabbed my camera, and we headed to the shoreline to take some pictures of the sunset. He was reminiscing on all the great memories we’ve created and then took my camera bag off my shoulder and grabbed my hand. Next thing I know, he was on one knee, pulling out the most beautiful ring to ask me to be his best friend forever. Tears were flowing at this point, and I couldn’t say “YES!” fast enough.
I soon found out that Mike hired a photographer ahead of time, so he could capture one of the most special moments of our lives! Our night continued with a delightful walk on the beach and sharing the amazing moment together. It was the proposal I always dreamed of.
