How We Met

Josh and I met at Vanguard University, a private Christian University in Costa Mesa, CA. We had a mutual friend group and hung out pretty frequently during our freshman and sophomore year. All of my friends had crushes on him and thought he was super cute, but I thought he was kinda of cocky. One day Josh decided he was interested in me and asked me to hang out. I said yes but insisted on inviting other people. He asked me six more times until I finally agreed to hang out with him alone (go on our first date). I told him I thought he was a jerk and would only date him if he became nicer and friendlier…surprisingly, he agreed! Eventually, after three months of casually dating, he convinced me to be his girlfriend!

How He Asked

With graduation approaching, I was eager to commit to spending the rest of my life with him; especially as we were getting ready to finish school and enter into the “real world”. I had been annoying Josh about proposing and he would get super upset, saying that he would do it when he was ready. Little did I know, he had already bought the ring a month earlier, made a Facebook event for the proposal, and was planning all of the little details while doing his best to lie to me so that I would be completely surprised at his proposal. Josh didn’t plan anything for Valentine’s day weekend (on purpose) in order for me to get really upset so that he would have to “make it up to me” with a date on the next weekend. The following weekend he took me on a date and I had no idea where we were going or what we were going to do. We got coffee and then rushed over to the beach to make the sunset in time. Josh was adamant on making the sunset in time, which is weird because he is normally super laid back and doesn’t care about little stuff like that. As we walked down the steps to the beach, I realized I had to pee super bad! He was so stressed that I needed to go to the bathroom because he really didn’t want to miss the sunset. We ran all the way across the beach to the restrooms and then he insisted that we go back towards the rocks because it was the best place to watch the sunset. I was so out of breath and confused why he was making me rush and go so back and forth. When we got to the rocks I told him that I didn’t want to climb up on them to watch the sunset because the tide was coming in and my shoes would get ruined! He convinced me to trust him and led me by the hand over the rocks to a blanket set up with our initials embroidered into it and sunflowers spread out on it. My stomach dropped when I realized what was happening. He took me by the hand and read me a poem he wrote about every single big step of our relationship, such as when I became his girlfriend, when he knew he loved me, and when he knew he was going to marry me. The poem ended with him getting on one knee, tears streaming down both of our faces, and him asking me to be his forever.

After I said yes (of course) all of our best friends popped out from behind the rocks! I was so surprised! They had taken photos of it all and were there to celebrate with us. We then headed up the steps to go out to eat with our friends and Josh told me that our parents had wanted to be there but couldn’t make it. I was really bummed because it was really important to me that they were going to be there when we got engaged. When we showed up to the restaurant, both of our families were sitting there waiting for us! He had surprised me again! I was so blessed to be able to share this experience with everyone I love, and my fiancé Josh did an AMAZING job planning and working hard to surprise me with the perfect engagement.
