Emily and Joseph

Where to Propose in Washington D.C.

How We Met

Most people don’t go on blind dates with high expectations, and neither did we. We were introduced by a mutual friend and had hours-long phone conversations for almost a month before I decided to meet the man behind the voice in person. It was the first blind date experience for both of us, and although we enjoyed each other’s conversation, we were still apprehensive about going on a date with a stranger.

We decided to meet in a mutual location between both of our houses so we could easily make our
escapes if the date did not turn out as planned. To our surprise, we completely hit it off and the
experience was greater than we had ever anticipated. We talked for hours until we realized both of our parking meters had run out of time. Joseph walked me to my car and told me he would call me later to make sure I made it home safely. He did exactly what he promised and called me every day after that.

Neither of us believed in love at first sight, but let’s just say that meeting each other changed our minds. We have been together since that evening five and a half years ago.

How He Asked

Joseph popped the big question on November 19th, 2016. We went back to his apartment after helping set up for his niece’s birthday party, and I had no clue what was in store. My favorite song, “Lady” by D’Angelo, started playing as soon as I walked in, and the small sitting room by the windows was the only room illuminated in the house. Joseph asked me to have a seat, and I noticed a photo book on the coffee table. As I flipped through the pages of photos of the two of us throughout the years, tears welled up in my eyes. Okay, I’m lying. My face was contorted to the point that I’m now glad no one was around to take any pictures. When I got to the last page, it read, “Emily, will you marry me?” I looked up, and Joseph was flashing his charming smile and holding a beautiful engagement ring ready for my finger. Of course, I screamed, “Yes,” and we popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

I waited until the next morning to call my family and friends because I wanted to soak up every bit the once-in-a-lifetime moment I had just experienced. We are getting married on May 11, 2018, at the Top of the Town in Arlington, Virginia. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend!
