Emily and Jack's Incredible Proposal (Captured by a Drone!)
How We Met
More three years ago, I met Jack while visiting friends at the University of Minnesota – Duluth. After a night filled with great conversation, Mario Kart and curiously, archery – I had no idea that Jack was the one for me. I’ll admit I thought he was very handsome and very fun, but in a few short months I was headed to Spain for a study abroad experience that would last nearly a year, my thoughts hardly lingered on boys.
While I spent my time soaking in the incredible history, beautiful architecture, stunning landscape and maybe a few glasses of wine, Jack and I had chatted a few times throughout my time spent in Spain. I still had no idea he had his sight set for me and I continued to enjoy my study abroad experience without much of an idea of his feelings for me.
Upon my return, I had a mutual friend of ours barking up my tree, trying to get me to hang out with her and the boys (her boyfriend -now husband and Jack’s little brother, Andy – along with the twins Jack and Bob). Jack and I spent the night by the campfire chatting away as if we were the only two people in the world, by now it was official – I liiiiiked liked him. But I was destined to leave poor Jack once again as I spent my summers working at an overnight camp (YMCA Camp Pepin).
Finally, by the end of the summer and a nasty bout of pneumonia I had apparently caught from beavers (I had spent a week up north backpacking on the Superior Hiking Trail), I had to beg my parents to let me leave the house due to my weakened immune system. When I had finally wore them down, I left to attend a bonfire at another mutual friend’s house and lo and behold who was in attendance? None other than Jack Knudsen. We spent a wonderful night talking like old friends (perhaps fueled by a little liquid courage) and were surprised and excited to find that we were moving to Minneapolis on the same day – September 1st, 2012 (which coincidentally is only a month and three days before we officially started dating). The rest, as they say is history…
How He Asked
I had always known that Jack would ask in Grand Marais, a picturesque town on the shores of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota. While we were dating, this had always been our getaway spot. So when he asked me last May if I would like to go up for the weekend, I had a small idea that might be what’s happening. Jack owns a video production company, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary that he packed his company’s drone for “shots of the town.” By the time we got to Grand Marais, it was about an hour before sunset and Jack began unloading the drone. Whenever he flies it a large crowd gathers to ask questions. Somehow in between people Jack found a quiet moment to let the drone hover, drop to one knee and ask me to marry him! I still can’t believe I get to marry my best friend!
