Emily and Isaac

Emily and Isaac's Engagement in First E-Free Church, Lincoln, NE

How We Met

Isaac and I met through a mutual friend during a fraternity event. I had gone with my sorority sister and some friends to an event for her boyfriend’s fraternity. I guess Isaac had spotted me from a distance because he asked my friend’s boyfriend about me and came up and introduced himself. He began asking me all of the typical get-to-know you questions and eventually asked for my number. Not thinking anything would come out of it since I wasn’t really looking for a relationship at the time, I gave it to him. Little did I know, he would text me later that night to make sure I got home safely. The conversation started there and hasn’t ended since.

A week later, Isaac and I went on our first date. We went to a coffee shop and then drove around for literally 4 hours, talking about anything and everything. We both knew after that night, it was the beginning of something very special.

How He Asked

A few weeks before March 24, 2018, (without me knowing) Isaac called one of my best friends to drive 8 hours from Colorado to be there for the special day. She then texted me saying she would be in town and wanted to spend the whole day with me! Her and I spent the whole day together that day, doing things her and I loved to do and just catching up since we hadn’t seen each other since August the year before! At around 4:30pm that day we arrived back at my apartment to get ready for our evening plans. As I entered my room, I was surprised to find a dress hanging in the doorway and a letter on my bed saying to get ready and meet Isaac for dinner at 5:30pm, my friend would know where we were going. I quickly got ready and my friend drove me to meet Isaac for dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. After dinner, we drove around to all of our favorite spots, reminiscing on special parts of our relationship. At our last stop, the coffee house that Isaac and I went to our on our first date, he got out of the car to blind fold me and we continued on to our last stop – the church I grew up in and the church we will be married in.

Backstory to the church I grew up in: A few years ago, before I met Isaac, the church was remodeling the sanctuary. Before they laid the new carpet down on the stage area of the sanctuary they let people write bible verses, blessings, and drawings on the wood. I went up and at the center of the stage, where people stand to be married I wrote, “Bless all that will be married here someday, including myself. 1 Corinthians 13.”

Back to the proposal story – Isaac drove us to the church. Still blindfolded he walked me into the church and when he opened the doors to the sanctuary he took my blindfold off. I immediately lost it. The center aisle was decorated with wood panels displaying the 1 Corinthians 13 bible verse. The stage was set up with pictures of our grandparents and parents on their wedding days. There was also a table set up on the stage with pictures of Isaac and I, a floral arrangement done by his mom, pictures of bible verses and a new bible that had my future, married name engraved on it. But what got me the most was displayed on the screens above us, a picture my parents had taken of me after I had written my blessing on the wood 4 years prior, before I even knew Isaac. As I walked up to the stage, unveiled beneath us because the church let him pull the carpet slab up, was the wood with my original writing – I had only told Isaac about that blessing once long before. Isaac got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him right in that spot. It was the most magical and special proposal and I had no idea that 4 years prior the man of my dreams would propose to me in that special spot.

Isaac was also wearing socks that had a pouch to hide the ring box and said “Marry Me.” That was so Isaac. Little did I know that our family was up in the balcony watching the whole proposal unfold. We headed to our country club after the proposal to a surprise engagement party that Isaac had organized with our close friends and family. This proposal was everything I could have dreamed of and more and I still cry when I think about it today!!
