How we met: Eddie and I have known of one another for a long time. Our families knew each other and we had been to several of the same parties, but we had never spoken before. We became friends on Facebook and began talking as friends. He asked me to go on a date with him, and we went to dinner and bowling on a Friday night. I was so nervous, I wasn’t very talkative, and he ended up taking me home early! We still talked, but we didn’t go on any more dates for a few months. In May 2010, the month and year that I graduated high school, a major flood hit our area in Tennessee. The house that my family lived in at the time was in danger of flooding, so we decided to evacuate. I texted Eddie and told him that we were evacuating, and he came over to help. With the help of several friends, we were able to get our valuables out of the house and to a safe place. Fortunately, our house didn’t flood, and we were able to bring put all of our stuff back. Eddie and I began talking more after the flood. We went out for ice cream one night, and stayed out for 3 hours. We talked about a little bit of everything, and the conversation seemed to come so easy. After that we began to hang out more and more. He even left a hat at my house so he would have an excuse to come back and see me again! On May 15, 2010, Eddie asked me to be his girlfriend. I had always known that he was going to be something special to me, even when we were only talking. Eddie has been with through high school graduation, almost all of college (I graduate this December!), and we have been with one another through the loss of several family members. He says I’m his best friend, I can say without a doubt that he is mine.

How he asked: When we started talking about marriage, we both agreed that we would wait until I graduated from college before we get married. My college graduation is coming up in December, so I knew that the proposal was coming soon. We had been to look at rings so that he would have an idea of what I wanted. My 22nd birthday was on April 28, and he kept asking me what I wanted for my birthday. I told him he knew exactly what I wanted, and he would just smile at me and roll his eyes. He bought the ring on the Tuesday before he proposed on Saturday. He had actually planned to propose on May 3rd. We were having a party to celebrate several birthdays (mine included), some friends’ engagement, and some graduations. Little did I know, my engagement would be celebrated at that party, too!

On the 25th, I had to be at school for a seminar and he was working in Nashville. As I was leaving school, he called me and asked if I would go with him the next morning to help him pick out a purse for his mom for her birthday. I thought it was strange that he asked, but I agreed. I didn’t know he actually did that to make sure that I didn’t make any other plans. On Saturday morning I got ready as usual. He came to pick me up for what I thought was going to be a morning of purse shopping. We got in his truck, and there was a video camera sitting on the console. He said that we were making a video for his Grandpa to tell him that we are thinking about him and we love him (Eddie’s Grandmother passed away in March). He drove the truck up on a ridge at my family’s farm. We call the ridge ‘Emily’s Ridge’ and Eddie and I plan to build a house there someday. We got out of the truck and he set the camera up on the toolbox in the back of the truck. He said he forgot something and went back to the driver side. I had no idea he was going back to get the ring. When he came back, he pushed record and said, “I told Emily we were making a video for Pa, but what I was really doing was getting her up here so I could do this..” He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was in shock at first. Of course, I said yes! I hugged and kissed him over and over again. It was a surreal moment, and it took a while for what actually happened to sink in. I was ENGAGED!! The man of my dreams had just asked me to marry him!

We wanted to tell our families before we put anything on social media. There were some tears shed and some hugs given, and of course, plenty of excitement! I can’t wait to plan our wedding, but most of all I can’t wait to be able to say that I am married to my best friend!
