Emily and Cody's Proposal on Lake Powell
How We Met: Cody and I had been best friends for years before we started dating. In fact, we even made the “If neither of us are married by the time we’re 30 we’ll just marry each other” pact a few years back. We always had a special connection, and went out of our way to make sure that our friendship remained a priority, even when we were busy and lived in different cities. We even arranged monthly breakfast meetings, just to keep involved in each others lives.
Over the years all of our friends and family made comments about the two of us, but the timing never worked out. However, I always knew there was something special about Cody. When I competed at Miss USA and didn’t win, he was the only one in a myriad of people whose hug made everything ok….and my two best friends knew in that instant that we would end up together. (I found this out after we started dating!)
So when the timing was finally right and we were both single, he made his move. He was at a concert one evening and told me to meet up with him. We were in a friend’s suite, and while Cody was sitting down, his dad pushed me towards the stairs and said “Go sit by Cody”….so I did. Halfway through the show he put his hand in my back pocket. Without saying it, we both knew where this was going. The rest is history, and I couldn’t imagine life without him. He is a true cowboy, with more strength and integrity than you can imagine. He supports all my crazy dreams without fail, and makes me constantly want to be a better version of myself. Being with Cody makes everything right in the world, and as cliche as it is, I feel like I’m living my own personal fairy tale.
How He Asked: Fast forward two years. We were in one of our favorite spots in the world, Lake Powell, with both our families and a host of friends for a week of fun on the houseboat. On one of our last days there, we decided to take nice pictures, as the scenery was unbelievable. So we all cleaned up and traded in our swimsuits for real clothes and lake water for showers.
Everyone took turns, from his family, to a guys’ pic, to my family. Then Cody said “Now you and I need to take some pictures.” I should have known right then that something was up, but I didn’t think anything of it.
We got in place and he took the lead. “Let’s take a kissing one. Okay, now a goofy one. Now a serious one.” His voice dropped significantly – “Now a really serious one.”
He turned to face me, grabbed both my hands and got down on one knee. He never let go of my hands as he told me how he loved me and how he couldn’t imagine a future without me. Everyone was shocked, and had no idea it was coming. (Save my parents, who live in a different state and whose permission he wanted to get first, and two of our best friends, who were helping with the whole ordeal.)
I’m so glad he held my hands, as I think his were the only thing keeping me from collapsing! I said yes without hesitation, completely forgetting that there’s the whole “ring” thing.
He did eventually get to grabbing it (which took some effort since I was hugging him so tight) and it was the most perfect ring I could have ever imagined. I was floored, and all I could say to everyone was “I get to marry him!!!!!!!!”
I got a stunning proposal, captured perfectly, in one of the most beautiful places in the world, but all I care about is the fact that I got a promise to spend forever with the best man I’ve ever met, my best friend.
