Emily and Aldin's Proposal in Bosnia
How We Met: Aldin and I met back in the summer of 2006. It was my second servant trip with the NJ Synod of the ELCA to Bosnia and Herzegovina, my first year being 2004. It was Aldin’s second year being an interpreter for our group. We were put in the same group that year, the drama group. I was leading the group, and we decided to act out the famous Dr. Seuss story “The Sneeches”. From the beginning, Aldin and I really connected, and were in the same activity group the next two summers. With the expansion of Facebook opening up internationally, Aldin and I were able to talk pretty often throughout theser year, and we developed a great friendship. Everytime I returned to Bosnia in late June, it was like we had seen each other the day before, not realizing an entire year had passed. Finally, in the summer of 2012, we realized that what we had was more than just a friendship, and started dating.
How He Asked: This past fall, I took a two week trip to visit Aldin and his family in Sarajevo. We had been apart for six months, and I told him I was coming, but surprised him at his door on Sept. 10th. We had planned to have a fancy dinner sometime during my visit, but we had planned so many other things, we didn’t get to it until two nights before I was heading back to the USA. He called and made reservations at the Radon Plaza, Sarajevo. They have this amazing restaurant on the top of the restaurants, that slowly spins so you get a 360 degree view of Sarajevo. We got all dressed up, and headed out to dinner. We had an amazing meal, just chatting about our time together, what our plans are for the future, things we are looking forward to, blah blah blah. All of a sudden, Aldin looks at me and says I have a special dessert for you, but you have to close your eyes. When I opened my eyes, a little chocolate cake and ice cream on a plate was in front of me, with the words “Would you marry me?” written in chocolate syrup. When I turned, Aldin was next to me down on one knee.
