How We Met

In 2011, my little sister, Kayte, started “dating” (or whatever you call being a couple in middle school) Jacob, who was one of my dad’s high school friend’s son. Grant, who is Jacob’s first cousin, just so happened to see my profile on Facebook one day (we went to different high schools), and he thought to himself, “Wow, that’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. I have to get her number!” (okay, he might not have thought that exactly, but I’m sure it was pretty close to that). So, instead of asking me himself, he asked Jacob to ask my sister if he could have my number. And of course, I said yes! Because what 10th grade girl doesn’t say yes to a cute guy that asked for her number?

We texted for a while and decided to meet each other for the first time at the movies. I took my bestie with me because who meets a guy for the first time without her bestie by her side? We saw Something Borrowed, and didn’t talk that much, but it’s kinda hard to do that at the movies. I don’t know why we thought that would be a good idea. After our little outing, Grant asked me if we could start talking, but I shot him down; however, we continued to text, and we got to know each other a little more. A few weeks later, Grant asked if we could start dating, and I, yet again, shot him down. After about 2 months of talking, which doesn’t seem like a long time now, but for a high school relationship, it was a long time to just text and hang out with each other, he asked me a third time if we could starting dating, and I finally gave into him and said yes! (props to him for sticking around) That was the first best decision I have made.

On June 27, 2011, Grant and I officially became a couple, and we’ve been a couple ever since. We’ve had so many great times together, and we’ve made so many memories. It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 6 years since we first met; even though I feel like I’ve known him my whole life. He’s my best friend, my go-to, my motivator, my better half. It may have taken me 3 times to say yes to being his girlfriend, but he only had to ask once for me to become his fiancée.

How He Asked

After 6 years of dating, Grant and I decided that we needed to go on a vacation together for the first time. So, we decided on Gatlinburg, Tennessee for our quick weekend getaway. I had a feeling that he could possibly be planning to propose on this trip, but I wasn’t positive. He’s usually not that great at keeping secrets, but he did a great job playing it off.

We were only getting to spend one whole day in Gatlinburg, so we knew we would have to pack everything in that we wanted to do. On Saturday morning, Grant and I woke up super early to start our day. We stayed in an Airbnb, and the man that lived on the property met with us the night before to discuss the hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We decided to hike to Laurel Falls first, and then on the way back in we would stop at the Little River Trail. Hiking has been something that we’ve done together since we first started dating. The scenery was absolutely and the weather was perfect!

On November 10, 2017, I answered the easiest question I’ve ever had to answer. Grant and I were walking down the trail along the Little River, and I had stopped to ask him to take a photo of me looking through a leaf (it was a terrible idea, and the pictures did not turn out like I was expecting). I gave up on the photo op, and as we were getting ready to walk further down the trail, Grant stopped me and got down on one knee. He apologized for making me wait so long haha. I was so surprised! It was just the two of us, so it was very private and intimate. It was absolutely perfect! He has had the ring since we went to look in January. I honestly can’t believe he kept it a secret this long! It’s so surreal that I get to spend forever with my high school sweetheart! We are so ecstatic to start planning this next chapter of our lives.
