Elyse and Alec
How We Met
Alec and I met during the first week of June in 2014 while working at the Harbor Crab Restaurant in Patchogue, New York. I was home from college for the summer and just started working there as a hostess. Alec had been working there for a few years as a server.
It was a slow lunchtime shift and all of the staff were in lobby. I was reading a magazine at the hostess stand, chatting with co-workers when Alec approached me. He politely introduced himself and started talking about a topic that (I believe) was related to physics. Perplexed and intrigued, I listened and tried to make sense of what he was talking about. The conversation evolved and he asked if I liked sports and wanted to play volleyball some time together outside of work. I replied: “my sister does and so does my dad! Do you want me to put you in contact with them?!” (Thinking he was on a league or something) Since I dislike sports so much, I kindly declined his invitation to play volleyball.
That afternoon, I went to my friend Steph’s backyard for poolside drinks (and gossip). I mentioned the nice guy at work I had just met who asked me to play volleyball with him. We went onto Facebook and found him. I messaged him and agree to go and play. I quickly realized how silly I was for almost passing up the opportunity to go out and have fun with such a nice guy. The rest is history.< Alec asked me to officially be his girlfriend on September 24, 2014. We were boyfriend and girlfriend for 3 years, 3 months and 17 days before he asked me to be his wife.
How He Asked
The proposal was absolutely perfect in every way. Alec proposed to me during my dream trip to Paris on January 10th, 2018 at Les Ombres Restaurant. I had just graduated college and we had recently moved in together. Ever since I was a little girl, I dreamed of going to Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower. Alec made many of wildest dreams come true all at once.
Since it was our first full day in Paris, we slept in late because of jet lag. Alec made me a beautiful breakfast in bed. After we got ready for the day we decided to walk around, take pictures, explore our neighborhood, eat delicious bread and see the Eiffel Tower. I knew that Alec’s parents had made dinner reservations for later that night and weren’t planning on doing much that day. He had me try and call the restaurant to confirm the reservation since I had phone service but they were not answering. Alec insisted we take a walk to the restaurant since it was nearby anyway. I agreed to go and check it out. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful. We confirmed our reservation and the table. We rushed back to the apartment to get ready for the night. As we were walking back from the apartment to the restaurant itself, I noticed Alec was a bit stressed about getting there on time. My GPS said we would make it there walking by 7:04 and our reservation was for 7:00. I assured him they wouldn’t give our table away, which they did not (thankfully) and that we should just enjoy our evening walk through Paris.
We were seated at the best table in the restaurant with the most incredible view. I wanted to capture the moment and take as many pictures as possible. Our waiter came over and asked what we’d like to drink. I said that I was fine drinking water. Alec insisted that we “go all out” and treat ourselves. He and our waiter convinced me that we should get a bottle of champagne and a bottle of wine for our table. It wasn’t that hard to convince me and our waiter quickly brought out glasses of champagne and some French appetizers. Alec asked the waiter to take a picture of us toasting. I was glad to take a picture and was happy Alec wanted to capture the experience too. He gave the waiter my phone said that were going to pose “toasting” with the champagne. While taking the picture I noticed Alec kept turning around and I didn’t understand why. I was becoming impatient and asked him what he was doing. Then there, in the most beautiful place on earth Alec got down on one knee and asked, “Will you marry me, my dear?” and I said “Yes!!!”
After the proposal, I was in shock. Although it seemed like the perfect time and place, I was truly surprised. At first, I was so excited that I lost my appetite for the 4-course meal that we were about to have. I had a million questions for Alec as to how he pulled it off. We were able to eat plenty and I’m so glad we did because that was the best meal I’ve ever had. The waiter brought over more champagne to congratulate us. We ate, drank and finally had the opportunity to relax. Alec even asked our waiter if we could take our empty wine bottle with us as a memory since I love wine so much. It was surprisingly warm outside considering it was January so we decided to spend the rest of the evening relaxing on the terrace of the restaurant, calling family members and friends to tell them the wonderful news under the twinkling lights of the Eiffel Tower.
