Ellis and Derby
How We Met
In the summer of 2013, I was starting college in a summer program called the Bridge Scholars Program at Georgia College and State University, this program had no more than 100 incoming freshman. I went into school knowing absolutely no one, so I was so surprised when I ran into an old friend I had lost touch with from middle school. After catching up and finding out he lived across the hall from me, he introduced me to his roommate, Derby. I know it is cheesy, but from the minute I met him, I knew there was something special. I even ran to my new dorm and texted my friends from back home that I had met my future husband that day (they can verify this too!). Turns out I was right!
How He Asked
It was the day of the annual Christmas service at North Point Community Church, the church I have gone to my entire life. Derby had not been feeling well that day, but he decided to still come to be with both of our families. When we got to the church, one of the staffers came to me and asked if I wanted to be part of a free raffle (I said of course!), and went on to hand other people raffle tickets as well. When the service was ready to begin, Derby said he really wasn’t feeling well now, and that we was going to go get some fresh air. Then, as he left, they called my number- I had won the raffle! I jumped up on stage, very excited to have won, but was kind of bummed Derby didn’t get to see it! They then handed me my prize box, but when I opened it, it was empty.
I was so confused, but before I knew it, Derby came from behind me and said, “Sorry that box is empty, but maybe this will make up for it”, then he proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me if I would marry him! I was so shocked that all I could do was shake my head yes and cry!
Then, when we got off the stage, I found out he had gotten all of my friends from out of town to come and be there for the big moment! He had secretly set up this entire raffle just to propose to me in front of all of my family, friends, and thousands at the church and watching online! It was the best proposal I could have ever asked for!
