Ella and Josh's 4th of July Proposal in New York City

Ella and Josh 4th of July proposal (23)How We Met: Josh and I met for the very first time the summer of 2012 at a friend’s beach get together. At the time, he was hanging out with someone else so I didn’t pay much attention to him; even though you couldn’t miss him! The day went on and I had to leave early to get to work, so I said my goodbyes.

Time went on and fall rolled around. After that summer day I never really saw or heard from him, nor did the rest of my friends. I guess that’s what happens when FSU Football Season starts; every weekend is filled with weekends in Tallahassee. In October of 2012, I was working at Saks Fifth Avenue and was on my lunch break. I was walking towards Starbucks to grab a bite to eat and I turned around and, much to my surprise, it was Josh! It had been months since I had last seen him.

He still tells me to this day, “I saw this girl walking in front of me wearing leopard pants and thought, who is that?!” We stopped and chatted for a few minutes playing catch-up and then we both went our separate ways. I got home later that evening to a Facebook message from him that said: “It was great seeing you, we should get together sometime.” Of course, without hesitation, I responded, and told him I would love to. A few days later we had our first “outing” at the Cock & Bull, a local hole-in-the-wall bar. From that evening on we were inseparable, making our relationship official not long after. What was to come was what you read in fairy tales…

How He Asked: A 4th of July getaway to New York City Ella and Josh 4th of July proposal (1)was in the works months prior. Josh’s middle brother, Jake, currently lives in Brooklyn and attends film school. Both my family and his family agreed that watching the fireworks from his rooftop apartment overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and Empire State Building would be the most incredible 4th of July ever. The only thing missing would be Josh. Working for the city of Sarasota, he would have to stay in town to work the 4th of July weekend festivities.

My parents and I flew out of Sarasota on July 3rd hoping to arrive to New York City at 5:30 pm, but with Hurricane Arthur brewing in the Atlantic Ocean, we did not arrive to the city until 11:00 that night. We finally arrived at the hotel, unbeknownst to me, what was to come the following day. The next morning we woke up, I had a gym date with my dad, and then we went to grab some breakfast in the lobby. With the Germany and France match of the World Cup about to start, I was stuck on the idea of watching it in the lobby, but my dad thought watching it in the room was a much better idea…boring! Come to find out, Josh was a few doors down planning his proposal.

Later that day, we met up with Josh’s family with plans to go check out Jake’s apartment. While the weather was not what we hoped for, everyone thought it would be the perfect time to go check out the rooftop view before the rain rolled in. So I went with it, and both families made our way to the rooftop to get a glimpse of what we would be witnessing later on that evening for the fireworks. Ella and Josh 4th of July proposal (24)

What was about to happen was something that would only happen in my wildest dreams! As I am overlooking the entire city of New York, I feel a little tap on my shoulder. I turn around to see Josh standing there. My first response was “What are you doing here?!” With no response, and an awkward silence, I immediately knew what he was about to do. Without hesitation, he said “I love you, you are my best friend” He then got down on one knee and asked “will you marry me?” I immediately said “YES!” The second thing I said was, “where is our pup??” Stu is the newest addition to our family, a 14-week-old miniature English bulldog. Seeing Josh down on one knee asking me to marry him is the greatest moment of my life thus far.

After all the tears and celebration, Josh filled me in on exactly how he was able to pull off something so amazing. He told me this day had been in the works since February of 2014. To my surprise, along with everything else, he was actually at the airport the entire time that we were there. His flight was scheduled to leave a little bit after ours, but with all of the delays, he was forced to sit outside of security so I wouldn’t see him for those 4 extra hours we were at our gate. We were finally allowed to board the plane, so I texted him to let him know. He left security to go to his gate and moments later, I texted him again telling him we were deplaning. He convinced security to let him back through the security entrance to avoid me seeing him. Our flight eventually took off at 6:30 pm and his flight not leaving until 11:30 pm. I must say, he is a trooper having to sit at the airport for over 7 hours.

The rest of the weekend was filled with many toasts and amazing dinners with my new family. I had always dreamed of having siblings and now I have two amazing brothers. I could not be any more blessed, having a new set of parents who I absolutely love and, most importantly, my parents love them as well. The love and support that each one of them brings to Josh and I, is something we will forever be grateful for.
